| 1st Mar.
On The National Road. Another barn owl had been killed. So
many get run over!
In Chania. Relaxing in one of the parks in warm spring
sunshine, we enjoyed being serenaded by a chiffchaff.

| 3rd Mar. At
Polymarchi. An adult bonellis eagle

| 4th Mar. At Kamisiana. 3 ruff so waders are starting to arrive.
|
| 6th Mar. At Neo Chorio. 6 swallows flew by.
|
| 7th Mar. At Neo Chorio.
A flock of 12+ crag martins stayed for an hour.

| 9th Mar. On one of the peninsulas.
Were a
bonellis eagle; and a peregrine falcon.
At Sirila. A flock of 50+ sand
martins.

| 10th Mar.
At Neo Chorio. 30+ swallows; and 100+
house martins.
At Naradzia. Lovely views of a rough legged buzzard
as it circled low down in search of a snack. Further on was a female
whinchat so the passerines are starting to migrate through. We even
found an early wheatear.

| 13th Mar.
At Neo Chorio. A flock of 6 honey buzzards lazily
circled over our valley before drifting northwards.
On the coast. 13+ swallows; 5+ house martins; another
wheatear; 2 wood sandpipers; and
a little ringed plover.

| 15th Mar. At Skoutolonas, We were amazed to see a
collared pratincole, extremely early and unusually, on its own.
|
| 16th Mar. On The National Road. Yet another barn owl run over.
Later. driving along, we saw over 30 common buzzards, they too are migratory not just
resident.
At Platanias. A steppe buzzard and a booted eagle.
At
Maleme. A booted eagle headed out over the coast. Driving along the
National Road we saw over 30 common buzzards, they too are migratory not just
resident.

| 17th Mar. At Platanias. A steppe buzzard
and another at Galatas.
At Gerani. A booted eagle.
At
Tavronitis. A single ringed plover was foraging.

| 18th Mar. At Aghia Marina. Another booted eagle
headed for the coast.
|
| 21st Mar. Heading for the coast. A juvenile bonellis eagle; and then,
on the coast. A grey heron; lots of
swallows; martins; and then super views of a lesser spotted eagle
circling low over some fields in search of food.

| 22nd Mar.
At Neo Chorio. 6 swifts; and a short toed
eagle that circled over our valley calling repeatedly. Will they nest
again in our area this year? We hope so!

| 25th Mar.
At Neo Chorio.
Lots of swifts and swallows; then a flock of
5 honey buzzards.
Along the coast. We found a steppe buzzard;
several moorhen; a snipe; a grey heron; 2 purple herons; 4 ruff; 2
little ringed plovers; and then fleeting glimpses of a rose coloured
starling.

| 27th Mar. At Neo Chorio. The breeding swallows are back
and immediately starting to prospect for nest sites.
|
| 29th Mar. On the coast. A flock of 3 honey
buzzards; a booted eagle; a black winged stilt; a little ringed plover;
and then a single honey buzzard.

| 31st Mar. At Neo Chorio. The first turtle dove of the
year was singing.
