AUGUST WEATHER WAS...
Like July, August was absolutely superb!
But there have been one or two fires in the countryside which have needed fire fighting helicopters and aeroplanes.  However, our first real rainstorm of the season arrived on 14th though we should have a good couple of months before winter.

Balkan Fires

Above: A nice picture showing where Crete - (Bottom Rt) - lies in relation to some of it's more northerly neighbours. In the left-hand third of the picture the boot, heel and toe of Italy are clearly seen with the Island of Sicily almost touching the toe.  The whole of Greece can be seen, the Peloponnese reaching down towards Crete.  Cyprus lies to the right - seeming to almost touch the edge of the Turkish mainland.  The Dodecanese and Cyclades Islands are clearly visible.

*The real purpose of this fine NASA image is to show fires burning across the Balkans.  These are just visible as tiny red dots in the picture above.  You can view the full size, absolutely superb (1010KB) image on the NASA website. LEFT CLICK HERE.

Leaders First to Astratigos.....
Last month we carried a news item about Kath leader, three youngest children and friend Jacq Sullivan, who had trekked across the Balkans in a Mitsubishi Pajero to Astratigos from the UK and returned via western Europe. (Link to Story)

We have now heard from Kath that their return journey was completed safely and that she will be completing their story for us, just as soon as she receives the her photographs from the processors.  Watch this space.

Moving to Crete - Practical Advice..
Also last month - we said in our comments about moving to Crete that:-

www.cretantraditionalhomes.com had GOOD advice about customs requirements for people moving to Crete which you could find on their website homepage link - Notes on Greece. They have and you can!

BUT - 'Notes on Greece
' is in fact a British Embassy publication which gives information on matters relating to Greece.  They can be obtained first hand from the British Consulate (Crete) in Iraklion (Heraklion).  Doing this will ensure that you have the most recent edition and professional contacts with up-to-date and wide ranging knowledge on matters relating to Crete.

If you would like a current copy of 'Notes on Greece' contact the consulate via:

crete@british-consulate.gr

An e-mail copy is available as a Microsoft word file - a very fast email of very useful information.

Photo Galleries En-Route...
1. Gathering olives and makes oil with
    Kolimbari Co-op..
2. A little countryside wildlife....
3. Barrel making with the Cooper of Kastelli!
4. Cheese making the traditional way - real
    milk!
5. Another real mountain Village - Anogia.

Day Cruise to Santorini....
The recent addition to our page covering some of the possible day trips you can make whilst holidaying on Crete - a voyage to Santorini - the legendary volcanic island off the north coast of Crete on board the MTS Atlantis - is likely to continue for another month, the final date is uncertain today but this years' cruises may stop sometime in October.  Link to Page.

The picture strip: Last month also  Bill and Heather Quinn and Dermot McCabe (Ireland) contributed a photo or two to this page taken on a recent trip to Crete.  This month Bill sent an absolutely superb photograph of a Griffon Vulture taken
in May 2002 in the Selinari Gorge opposite Moni Ag. Georgios. Left-click picture 4 to see the enlarged image. Superb...

Bill said,
"You are very welcome to use it if you wish." We are seriously indebted.  I am not a bird watcher but this photo is worth a look by anyone... Almost alive...

I don't suppose you can send us a pint of Guinness too?!...

The first picture is of the 'Sfentoni' Cave of Zoniana near Anogia in the prefecture of Rethymnou - on a lower slope of Mount Psiloritis.  The cave is a good photo-stop, quite beautiful inside - but no flashguns are allowed.  A good low-light digital camera or cinecam should get you some good pictures.

Ricochet South are still seeking people to help make a new Channel 4 documentary about making a new life in Greece.  Is this you or do you know of anyone?

NO GOING BACK

ARE YOU OR ANYONE YOU KNOW SELLING THEIR HOME IN THE UK TO MOVE ABROAD AND START A NEW SMALL BUSINESS THIS SUMMER?

Due to the success of Channel 4's compelling documentary series No Going Back, Brighton based television company Ricochet South are looking for exciting stories for a new series due to be broadcast early next year in 2004.

Each programme tells a different story of people leaving the rat race behind and risking everything to transform their lives and pursue their dreams of starting a business venture overseas. It is 1 hour of prime time TV on Channel 4 so amazing publicity for the participants business venture!

Some of the stories featured in previous programmes included farming olives and grapes in scenic rural Spain, carp fishing holidays in idyllic Brittany, safaris in Zambia, and art courses in Provence.

We are particularly interested in talking to people who are planning to relocate to any of the Greek islands.

So if you are selling up and moving abroad this summer to start the business of your dreams or you know anyone who is, contact Lisa Winter at Ricochet South on +44 (0) 1273 604 792 or e-mail lisa.winter@ricochetsouth.co.uk

Both ANEK and Blue Star Ferries have car ferry services between Souda Bay and Piraeus.

Anek currently leaves at 9.00pm whilst Blue Star leave at 11.30pm.

SUMMER WEATHER
Still nice but is now turning rapidly to Autumn - maybe nice in the day but can be cold particularly at night and sometimes very windy

ROAD SAFETY REPEAT

Following a series of fatal accidents involving heavy goods vehicles and passenger coaches in Greece earlier this year the Traffic Police are unlikely to overlook traffic violations of any kind.  In some areas they test erring drivers not only for alcohol but also drugs.

Although there have been recent reductions in Road accidents and deaths Greece is still bottom of the EU league table

*Motorcyclists - the alcohol limit here is almost Nil.. Don't drink.

Even school buses are being stopped!!

Earthquakes.... Wobbles continue...
Since the 6.4 Richter Scale Lefkada earthquake on 14th August  there have been several further earthquakes affecting Greece - at least two of which were felt on Crete.  None of these 'quakes caused damage or injuries and could be described as part of normal life in this region - not something to be concerned about under normal circumstances.

31 Aug: 3.3 Richter Scale (Mild) 'Quake in Thessaloniki.
01 Sep: 3.7 R (Mild) on Parthena the fault line.
09 SEP: 4.2 R in Rio-Antirio straight near Patras.
15 SEP: 4.8 R (under-sea) off Kos - felt as far as Crete.

None of these earthquakes caused damage or injuries and the rising magnitude should not be taken as an indication of increasing activity.  There is constant activity in Greece and it's islands.  Although at least one professor believes that there will be at least 4 major quakes in the future.  Link.

A look at our earthquake page will show that there have been no serious quakes for some time - the last notable (not serious) on Crete occurring in May and June last year.  No serious damage was reported.  Our own page - earthquakes - will be updated shortly to include all recent 'quakes in Greece.

Holidays sometimes go badly wrong ...
Recent press releases here about holidaying in Greece are hard to understand and explain.

Malia, Crete.
Early in September a 22-year old British tourist attacked a 30 year-old barman in Malia Crete - biting off part of the latter's nose for no apparent reason.  The barman was rushed to hospital for surgery.... Link to Story.

Later a court in Iraklion, (Heraklion), found him guilty of the assault and reportedly imposed a 40-month jail sentence with an option of 20,000€ to suspend his jail sentence pending an appeal. Link to Story Update.

*It is interesting to observe that a bar owner in Faliraki, Rhodes, scene of recent problems with British tourists - including two deaths, claimed that the scene had been spoiled by police intervention - including the arrival of two policemen from the UK to assist the Greek police, and that next year he was going to Malia on Crete where it was all happening. Previous site story and Links.

Corfu.
1st September: A Hotel owner was holding on to the bags of British tourists scheduled to leave because of a financial dispute with the tour operator.

Well, that's about it for now.....
I hope that this page and the information and news given is proving useful.  If there is anything that you would like to see - particularly if you would like a picture included - please let me know.  Magazine Editor Michael Weckert tells me that the third edition is about to come out - FREE! Frappé Magazine - Humourous, helpful and available free at many sites around Chania and district - ask at your hotel reception.

E-Mail Requests..
I receive some brilliant e-mails - really - and they are very welcome.  But sometimes there is no acknowledgement that our answer has been received.  We don't mind, but worry occasionally that someone may not have received an answer from us and think the worse of us!  We will ALWAYS reply to e-mail so please, if you have mailed us and not received an answer - resend your mail - we didn't get it or have somehow overlooked it.
Our response time is usually within 48 hours.

Personal Information..
We have been asked in the past to help locate people. We would love to be able to assist but regret that are unable to do this.  There is fuller comment in previous issues of CV News.

Questions and Answers..
Quite a lot of questions are received here at Cretanvista and, as with e-mails and other forms of communication, we do our best to supply valid answers.  We never respond "Off the Top of our Heads" but always research the answer - even if we already have one (things change) before passing the information on.  We provide links to appropriate alternative sources where we have them.  The answers are given with the proviso that recipients are responsible for any action taken by them.

Book Reviews.
Because each book review is original - we steal nothing from the book covers or the reviews of others - it takes a little longer to deal with each.  No point our reviewing the reviews when what readers really want to know about is the content! 'Books and good reading'.

Bird Watchers.

Paul Smiths bird watching diary page remains very popular and hopefully Paul is well into his September sightings.  We are sincerely indebted to visitors who have supplied photographs.  Currently we are displaying these in CVNews but hopefully we will receive enough to start a gallery of Cretan sightings.

Book Reviews - Still no change...
The last recent review -  'Moments of Cretan Nature' by Anastasios Sakoulis, (ISBN: 960-91979-0-6) "Stigmotipa Tis Kritikis Freesis" in Greek -  is a super book with some magnificent photographs.  Our review is accompanied by a small photo gallery - our first review to do so.  Our site pictures (from the book) are, we think, nice!  The printed pictures in the book are in almost all cases very much bigger, nicer!

Books and Good Reading - Moments in Cretan Nature

Reviews in Preparation...
'
Eleni' by Nicolas Gage.  Published by Harvill - (ISBN 1 86046 346 0) first published 1983.  Reprinted.

This is his true story of a son seeking to avenge his mothers murder by ELAS Guerillas during the Greek civil war.  It is real.  It is compelling.  It is harrowing in the extreme.  It reveals the Greek psych as nothing I have ever read.  But, unless you have no feelings, it could haunt you forever......  'Eleni' (in preparation).

Can this be you.....or yours?
Every so often when I am out and about taking photographs I come across someone who could be you - or something which could be yours (or theirs!!).  Maybe passing in the opposite direction on a full tandem bicycle (yes, that happened); an unattended car with foreign plates; something which catches my eye and leaves me not knowing......... Either there was no one to ask or they were moving too quickly!  I thought that perhaps site visitors might like to see or be able to help identify one or two 'unknowns' which have left me wondering who, or what I have missed.   Can this be yours?

Opel Rekord saloon car, missing rear offside wheel, no jack!

             Kolimbari - Near Chania 1st Sept 2003
Opel Rekord - No offside rear wheel - No Jack!!

Until next month, best wishes from here on Crete. WB
