Astratigos Village Life.
Back to the stone age
....
Stone, the rock of ages. Strong. Hard. Heavy. Almost unbreakable - but quite capable of breaking other things, especially if dropped from a height! Or, in the case of bank balances, applied gently and carefully (and apparently permanently) around one's house until the increasing pressure is felt at one's bank!

We had agonized for several years before taking the plunge - speaking metaphorically.
The pathways,  patios and our large balcony still had concrete surfaces several years after we completed the house. The reason was water. Water can make wet things very slippery. Those marble tiles and steps you see often on new buildings, the beautifully patterned glazed tiles which look so good in the summer sunshine, can become veritable skidpans in winter. A little algae, a few wet leaves, a little mud on a dark stormy night when one hurries, equate possibly to
broken bones.

Now final our decision, after seeing a super stone paved patio and steps at a friend's house in another village, was crazy paving ala genuine stone. Beautiful natural texture surface non-skid stone of differing colours.

The boss Ilya (Serbian) and his captain -  Vangelis (Albanian) had already assessed the job, given us a 'final price' and consumed a bottle each of my cold (Greek) beer whilst negotiating the start date. 'Better while the weather is cool and rain about' was Ilya's bid. We all agreed - the longer cement gets to set the better the finished product is said to be. Better to avoid hot sunny weather... The best laid plans....

Ilya arrived along with an unexpected mini heat wave - well he would wouldn't he - this is Crete! Still finishing a previous contract which had suddenly been extended he kept all the balls in the air magnificently.

It certainly wasn't his doing that Pam's sister and her husband decided to arrive in the middle of the would have been finished (had it not been for the double contract with the same number of men) paving, or that our much loved friend Judy decided at short notice to arrive at the same time!!

Ilya and his team were magnificent. They paved around us as we did a sort of un-choreographed alternating waltz between our three patios and 'in-progress' paving of the paths. Much better than sitting indoors! Or going out to find that you had been 'paved out' upon your return! And it afforded me the opportunity to do what I do best. Unsettle people!

'Do you know how to do that' I spent happy times demanding of anyone at a critical stage of anything - someone about to lay a heavy piece of stone on setting cement, or counting the shovels of sand or cement going into a rotating mixer - or similar questions at critical times being favourites.

Ilya team were amazing - doing absolutely outstanding work whilst surrounded in turn by what was in effect a British tour group! They also made the most of Pam's superb sandwiches, (and my cold beer), but paid the price. Once I appeared in the middle of their lunch break - there they were - huge sandwiches and cold beers, enjoying their break in the sunshine when I arrived, poker faced. Addressing Ilya directly I asked 'Are you enjoying your food?'  All replied with vigorous smiles and nods of their heads - 'super... super.'  I gazed unflinchingly at them and without changing my poker-face expression said very quietly 'I am glad, I am not allowed to have any.'  And walked away!

Their weak grins subsided as the silence took hold and they sat looking at each other in askance of my strange behaviour. Silent and subdued for the few moments it took me to turn around and say, with a Cheshire cat grin all over my face, ...'Because I upset Pam'!

Nothing amuses men more than an apparently hen-pecked  husband who has fallen foul of his wife!  You think that's bad said Ilya, now grinning widely along with his men - 'wait 'till you find out that your toilet's blocked!!'

In the News... Reviews..

'First-Time Godfather'...
Is said to be a bit of a social comedy set in Fres - between Chania and Rethymnon and has a genuine Cretan actress, Eleni Kastani in a major role... The review sounds good - and Crete can certainly do with a bit of comedy right now...

But Murder is definitely not funny...

And nor is shooting tourists...
But a German visitor was hit in the stomach by 'a stray bullet' outside her hotel, in Chania. Not seriously hurt , but will she come back to Crete?             Link to Story.

And especially not Children...
Though it is very unlikely that any child would be deliberately shot on Crete - stray bullets don't know that.

Who are extremely vulnerable...
A large number of children (35) drown in Greece each year. ert.gr news agency reported on 13th June that another child - a 5 year old Norwegian boy on holiday - drowned in a hotel pool near Chania.

A Little Extra News

Well, here I was, thinking that it had been a good time to have a break or two - a family holiday, off to Northern Greece for a few days on what was a very special trip, a few birthdays, feet up in the sun!

I should know better. Never have I seen such a woeful batch of news awaiting addition to the site as I found on my return... I am usually among the first to ask why news reporters seem to push all the disasters in life, but this month I had serious difficulty finding anything at all to laugh about on Crete...

Murders, shootings - accidental or otherwise, children drowning (again) in hotel swimming pools; puffer fish making the sea a bit hazardous; heat waves causing fires or simply killing the more fragile and the fire fighters trying to control the blazes; hospitals under serious pressure; climate change and increasing urban development threatening 'Desertification' of Crete; electricity supplies failing because demand - much apparently from air conditioners - exceeds supply; water supplies dwindling as new swimming pools fill; and to cap it all - pot that you can't smoke/eat/make into tea/sell or even give away because it was dumped overboard from some passing freighter and has become soaked in sea-water!!

Oh, and if you try to smuggle into Chania jail you will be caught and (right!) probably end up pot-less in Chania jail..!!

Is there to be no let up - or is this the start of Dante's Inferno?Well, from where I sit there is always light on the horizon.

Crete is an incredibly rough and beautiful island. Inhabited mostly, to my mind, by an incredibly tough, hospitable and beautiful people. If you can't see that you are missing something - look again, carefully. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder....

What do you see now?!

A Little Site News.

But what we already have isn't at all bad -
judging by the 27000 plus (and rising) monthly unique visitor figures to Cretanvista websites.  But taking nothing for granted, we are all hard at work - working on updates and getting out and about - obtaining the new information and photographs we need to keep Cretanvista well to the forefront of websites about Crete. Two new galleries - our nature gallery and the WWII museum at Askyfou are progressing well. We treasure our visitors...Really!

Since last month's news we have covered a lot of miles, bounding about on the Rodopos peninsula - to Agia Ioannis and back to Kolimbari; re-visiting villages such as Mhlia (and re-tasting the very excellent food there); taking the Kastelli ferry (complete with car) to Githio on the Peloponnese - exactly as outlined in our pages, and if you have ever wondered - yes we do drive to all the places we feature, including the UK, regularly.

Cretan Art and crafts - Weaving...
Our updated hand-weaving page is now on-line. This revision includes the first full project - start to finish!  A beautiful traditional craft producing beautiful products. And much more to follow.

Photo Galleries
Bird Galleries
:  Gallery Page 4 Online...
The first pages of our bird photograph gallery went on line in March 2006. Colin Turvey's Cretan Bird-Life photograph gallery (see February 2006 News) now has a fourth page. We are now working hard on adding page 5 - another 12 of Colin's bird photographs - which will bring the number up to 60 so far. A big plus for Cretanvista.

Wild Flowers
: Now 216 different wild flowers.
99% of photos have been taken right here at the base of the Rodopos peninsula. We are continually working on these galleries and will, as soon as practicable, be adding further online pages, including detailed reference pages and more photos of each specimen. We will be publishing our book - but all the information will remain on line.

Cretan Countryside:
The basic page is already on-line - has been so for some time.  In the background we have been busy collecting more photographs and will very soon be publishing the first gallery. There really is some superb wild life on Crete.

No Change - Still in line.
Anastasios Sakoulis, who contributed the magnificent gallery from his book on Cretan wildlife Moments of Cretan Nature to our site,  has also contributed 18 pictures of birds for addition to a gallery. We will attach this to Paul Smith's bird-watching page in the near future.

But that isn't all...
Anastasios Sakoulis has also given us permission (and supplied the photographs) to produce a gallery of his latest book. A book of 20 superb postcards of Cretan wildlife called Naturally... Crete

Miniature Chapels of Crete.
A first!
Klaus-Dieter Thill - author of  Minaturkapellen auf Krista, a real photo album detailing some of those enigmatic roadside shrines of Crete. Klaus has supplied photographs for this gallery which is now on-line here at Cretanvista. There will also be, of course, a review the book - which we have already. Klaus is not keen on that as the book is not publicly available, but we hope to persuade him!

*Klaus assures us that his Chania photographs are imminent - if all goes well we will be publishing these very soon now.

Calendar Photo Galleries:
A new one every year! The 2006 gallery is, of course, on-line (LINK) and the 2007 Calendar gallery is as good as complete. We are already arguing the topic selection for this year's 2008 gallery!

GENERAL: There are now 13 galleries featuring aspects of Cretan life, including sunrise and sunset pictures; Souda Bay War Cemetery; and the gallery of magnificent wild-life pictures by Anastasios Sakoulis, author of  "Stigmotipa Tis Kritikis Freesis" (Moments of Cretan Nature); our infant gallery about house renovation; and of course our annual calendar galleries containing 60 or so pictures of north western Crete about to increase by 12 - for 2007.

Meanwhile, with the commencement of the holiday season upon us, we will be out and about with our cameras. Watch this space - very, very carefully. Remember that you might just be in it!!

E-Mail Requests..
We receive some brIlyant e-mails - really - and they are very welcome.  But sometimes there is no acknowledgement that our answer has been received.  We don't mind, but worry occasionally that someone may not have received an answer from us and think the worse of us!  We will ALWAYS reply to e-mail so please, if you have mailed us and not received an answer - resend your mail - we didn't get it or have somehow overlooked it.

Quite a lot of questions are received here at  Cretanvista and, as with e-mails and other forms of communication, we do our best to supply valid answers.  We never respond "Off the Top of our Heads" but always research the answer - even if we already have one (things change) before passing the information on.  We provide links to appropriate alternative sources where we have them.  The answers are given with the proviso that recipients are responsible for any action taken by them.

We trying to build a specialist calendar of birds - whilst we are building our own library photographs - contributions are always welcome. They will always be acknowledged and copyright will remain your own.

Bird Watchers.
Paul Smith's JUNE is on line at all Cretanvista URL's.

We remain deeply indebted to Han and Inger van der Lelie, 3815 PV Amersfoort, who enabled us to publish the June 2005 page of Paul's unbroken series.

BUT, we are now working on a solution to this particular indebtedness, not just hoping that one will pop out of the Cretan countryside!  We had hoped that perhaps Han and Inger would return to Crete - we know that Paul would just love to meet the couple who took over his page - and then skipped the country whilst he was still hospitalised!

We would love to know how their bird watching has progressed since this starlit beginning......

Can this be you.....or yours?.. This Month - Wilf B.
Every so often when I am out and about taking photographs I come across someone who could be you - or something which could be yours (or theirs!!).  Maybe passing in the opposite direction on a full tandem bicycle (yes, that happened); an unattended car with foreign plates; something which catches my eye and leaves me not knowing......... Either there was no one to ask or they were moving too quickly!  I thought that perhaps site visitors might like to see or be able to help identify one or two 'unknowns' which have left me wondering who, or what I have missed.   Can this be yours?
