AUGUST WEATHER .....

Hot days - ranging from 84 F to 96 F - and hot nights - falling only once below 70 F - have left us in a lather. Humidity has been much higher than August norms, so we have been grateful for any sea breezes.

Photograph: Spinalonga island from Plaka

The Pilgrimage.
Although we had previously visited Elounda in the east of Crete, we had never been out to the former leper colony island of Spinalonga . However, having read the excellent novel “The Island” by Victoria Hislop (see review on this site), Spinalonga shot up to the top of our list of places to visit.

We decided to base ourselves in Plaka, a tiny place with a handful of tavernas, a mini market, a sprinkling of cottages and a few apartments to rent. You can see Spinalonga from everywhere in Plaka. Your eyes are drawn to it time and time again. It floats offshore like some huge fortified cruise ship, and as the light changes during the day, parts of it are thrown into shadow or sharper relief. Individual buildings are clearly visible from the village, and it is only too easy to imagine the agony of standing on the shore, looking across the narrow stretch of water to where a loved one was confined for ever, destined to die there of a horrible and painful disease.

Having heard that large tourist boats to Spinalonga run from Aghios Nikolaos and Elounda, we decided to take a small early boat direct from Plaka, to try and be ahead of the crowds. So, at 9.30 on a bright warm morning we left the dock at Plaka and made the short crossing to the island of the damned.

All was silence when we arrived, and we moved quietly up towards the old Venetian tunnel which gives access to the leper colony. The stone forming the entrance to the tunnel is bright and golden, but it turns sharply to the right, shutting out the light as you enter.  It is a hugely powerful metaphor for the transition from the old carefree life to another, frightening and sinister.

Many of the first buildings you come to are former Ottoman or Venetian constructions, from the time when the island was a fortress guarding the entrance not only to the Elounda bay, but the bay of Mirabello as a whole. A small street of houses has been partly restored, with brightly coloured wooden shop fronts; one of these is a (poorly equipped) shop which sells cards or old maps of the island.  A couple of former shops display archeological finds, covering all the island’s history – not only the little section showing enamel bowls, bedpans, medicine bottles, pipettes and ancient medical equipment.

Several information boards explain the island’s importance over the years, and this is perhaps where one starts to become aware that the ‘leper connection’ is going to be very played down. For it certainly is shamefully played down. Once a cure was found for leprosy, the last patients left Spinalonga in 1957. The island seems to have been forgotten until the 1970’s, when many of the buildings built by and for the lepers were knocked down by the Greek government – perhaps another case of sanitization of the unsavoury past?

Over much of the rest of the island, there is supposed to be some restoration work in progress, although there is little sign of it except for notices prohibiting access to areas where buildings have become dangerous. It is possible, however, to walk through some of the derelict buildings and catch a glimpse of a life being lived there – here a bread oven, there a lavatory pit, over there a relic of a wooden staircase leading to a worm-eaten upstairs floor. The very stones exude the atmosphere, and in the quiet of the morning it was possible to lean back on a wall and imagine the village street as it must have existed, peopled with inhabitants in the various stages of their illness – from the new arrivals, as yet appearing hale and hearty, to those moving agonizingly slowly on misshapen limbs.

One of the remaining two-storey buildings was the former hospital. All that remains are a few sun-bleached shutters shading rooms that must have been witness to appalling pain and suffering. It is still possible to work out which must have been the kitchen area, which the lavatories, and which the treatment or individual rooms for the patients. The access from the main path was blocked off to discourage entry, but a more careful look around the back led to an entrance where it was possible to creep in and have a better look at what was there.

Another poignant area is the graveyard.  If the small notice “Leper graveyard” had not been on the wall, it would not have been obvious what it had been. There are no memorials, no religious artifacts, no book of the dead – nothing to remind us that hundreds and hundreds of people came here to exist as the living dead until they ended up under one of the concrete slabs that now cover the area.

In the distance we could hear the approach of the large tourist boats. Disco music blared out, vying with over-loud commentary in fifteen different languages. The peace of the island was about to be shattered, and the atmosphere destroyed. It was time to leave. While we waited for our tiny boat to take us back across the water, we moved away from the crowds and sat in the shade of a tree at the water’s edge, looking back to Plaka. How near it was – and yet how far away.

A Little Extra News....

The whole of Europe will have seen television pictures of the dreadful fires that have swept Greece this month. Loss of life has been appalling - over 60 people have died in the firestorms that have ravaged parts of the country. As a General Election had already been announced for September 16th, the opposition in Parliament has been making huge capital of the ineffectiveness of the fire service and the inadequate provision of equipment, manpower and water. Blame, of course, has been laid at the door of the present government. How tragic that something like this is used for political point scoring!

On a lighter - and more social - note, Wilf and Pam, together with Ann and Richard, were lucky enough to meet up recently with two charming ladies from America...

If you have read 'Eleni' or 'There's a Place for Us' by Nicholas Gage, or 'North of Ithaca' by Eleni Gage (all reviewed on this site), you will know that Eleni Gage - the younger - is the granddaughter of Nicholas Gage's mother, the first Eleni.

Eleni and her mother Joan were in our part of Crete researching eco- and agri-tourism for an article for the New York Times. We four Cretan residents had recently visited Lia, the remote village in North West Greece where the sad history of 'Eleni' took place, so we had plenty to talk about!

Not much actual 'News from the Village' this month - we have all been lying low to escape the hordes of mainland Greeks who visit in August!

Until next month, kalos Ithate Stin Kriti,

A Little Site News. (No Change this month).

And what to date isn't at all bad - judging by the 27000 plus (and rising) monthly unique visitor figures to Cretanvista websites.  But taking nothing for granted, we are all hard at work - working on updates and getting out and about - obtaining the new information and photographs we need to keep Cretanvista well to the forefront of websites about Crete. *Two new galleries - our nature gallery and the WWII museum at Askyfou are progressing well. We treasure our visitors...Really!

Cretan Art and crafts - Weaving...
Our updated hand-weaving page is now on-line. This revision includes the first full project - start to finish!  A beautiful traditional craft producing beautiful products. And much more to follow. *Weaving is in full swing and dyes are being made up and the photographs taken to add to this section.

Photo Galleries
Bird Galleries
:  Gallery Page 4 Online...
The first pages of our bird photograph gallery went on line in March 2006. Colin Turvey's Cretan Bird-Life photograph gallery (see February 2006 News) now has a fourth page. We are now working hard on adding page 5 - another 12 of Colin's bird photographs - which will bring the number up to 60 so far. A big plus for Cretanvista. *And we now have more of Colin's 'photos - though he did send some recently (really) - of an Boeing F18 Hornet jet fighter!! A rather different 'Bird'.....

Wild Flowers: Now 216 different wild flowers.
99% of photos have been taken right here at the base of the Rodopos peninsula. We are continually working on these galleries and will, as soon as practicable, be adding further online pages, including detailed reference pages and more photos of each specimen. We will be publishing our book - but all the information will remain on line. *More photographs are now being added.

And More -
Athanasios Sakoulis, who contributed the magnificent gallery from his book on Cretan wildlife to our site Moments of Cretan Nature has now contributed 18 pictures of birds for addition to a gallery.

No Change - Still in line.
Anastasios Sakoulis, who contributed the magnificent gallery from his book on Cretan wildlife Moments of Cretan Nature to our site,  contributed 18 pictures of birds for addition to a gallery some time ago now. We will attach this to Paul Smith's bird-watching page as soon as possible.

But that isn't all...
Anastasios Sakoulis has also given us permission (and supplied the photographs) to produce a gallery of his latest book. A book of 20 superb postcards of Cretan wildlife called Naturally... Crete

Miniature Chapels of Crete.
A first!
Klaus-Dieter Thill - author of  Minaturkapellen auf Krista, a real photo album detailing some of those enigmatic roadside shrines of Crete. Klaus has supplied photographs for this gallery which is now on-line here at Cretanvista. There will also be, of course, a review the book - which we have already. Klaus is not keen on that as the book is not publicly available, but we hope to persuade him!

*Klaus's photographs have arrived - we will be publishing these very soon now.

Calendar Photo Galleries:
A new one every year! The 2006 gallery is, of course, on-line (LINK) and the 2007 Calendar gallery is as good as complete. We are already arguing the topic selection for this year's 2008 gallery!

GENERAL: There are now 13 galleries featuring aspects of Cretan life, including sunrise and sunset pictures; Souda Bay War Cemetery; the gallery of magnificent wild-life pictures by Anastasios Sakoulis, author of  "Stigmotipa Tis Kritikis Freesis" (Moments of Cretan Nature); our infant gallery about house renovation; and of course our annual calendar galleries containing 60 or so pictures of north western Crete.

Bird Watchers.
Paul Smith's AUGUST page is on-line at all Cretanvista URL's. Paul's serious health problems and extra hospital visits have continued to conspire to prevent his bird watching during the July. Only the second occasion this has happened since August 2001 - when his page was published compliments of  Han and Inger van der Lelie, 3815 PV Amersfoort, who enabled us to publish the (June 2005) page. Paul's series has otherwise remained unbroken.  Pauls own page is now back - Well done Paul - a great effort and very, very much appreciated.
