JULY WEATHER WAS...
Absolutely superb!  If you like the heat...  Watching a TV reporter in the UK, a couple of days into August, awaiting the temperature to climb to the magical UK record of 100F, I had to wonder.  He was stood outside the perimeter fence at Heathrow - sun blazing down; traffic streaming by and the one a minute jets landing and taking off - pumping out even more heat - whilst contributing his own hot air by trying to talk the temperature up!!

Leaders First to Astratigos...
Leader family and friend at Astratigos, 2003.

  Leaders First!                Copyright - Cretanvista.gr

Pictured above: Kath Leader (left) together with her children Esme; aged 3(Top); Seth (10); Loise (13); and family friend Jacq Sullivan, were the first people we know of in recent times to travel here via the overland route across the Balkans.

Once an attractive alternative to the ferry routes from Italy, overland to Greece from the UK lost it's appeal for most people following the outbreak of war in the Balkans, which have only recently stopped.

In their Mitsubishi Pajero the group traveled (Dover-Calais) across Europe taking in France; Germany; Austria; Slovenia; Croatia; Bosnia; Montenegro; Albania; Macedonia; and finally Greece, crossing from Piraeus to Chania on an old favourite of ours, ANEK Lines Lissos.

As you read this the Leader family are taking a more well trodden path back home - a ferry from Chania to Piraeus - this time ANEK Lines Lato - a short-ish drive to Patras and then another ferry ride over the Adriatic to Venice!  On the Minoan Lines Icarus Palace this time, before traveling back to Calais and the UK via the more traveler-frequented Western European countries - Italy; France et al.

Getting to Crete via the route taken involved 2556 Kilometres and no little adventure, which Kath has agreed to write up for Cretanvista. Watch this space!  Oh, and Happy Birthday Loise - 12yrs old when they left the UK and 13yrs old when they started their return.  Some journey!

Practical Advice..
Last month in comments about moving here to Crete we said:-

*One piece of practical advice we emphasize is that if you intend to move to Crete and claim tax exemption on your personal belongings, especially your car, start with the Greek Embassy in London and check with the British Consul in Iraklion.  The importation of cars especially can be seriously problematic.  It can be so even for people following the rules, and failure to do so may cost you your car, a large fine and maybe your sanity!!  Remember that it is the local customs officers who will make the final decisions....

We also gave an unrequested plug to an estate agency - www.cretantraditionalhomes.com because we had heard first hand that they were a good company.  Well here is another - if you want GOOD advice about customs requirements you will find it on their website at
their homepage link - Notes on Greece.

Countryside Page & Flower Gallery Open!

4. Cheese making the traditional way - real

Page Addition...
A recent addition to the page covering some of the possible day trips you can make whilst holidaying on Crete is a voyage to Santorini - the legendary volcanic island off the north coast of Crete - it is well advertised by travel agents and if you are staying in tour company accommodation their information boards and tour reps may well have the trip organised from your front door!

The picture strip: Earlier this year three bird watchers from Ireland returned to Crete on another bird watching expedition.  Bill and Heather Quinn and Dermot McCabe had something of a successful trip this year when they discovered what they thought to be, and probably is, a Siberian stonechat.

One of their expert contacts, Killian Mullarney, a well known illustrator of the Collins Bird Guide* confirmed that he thought that it was one of the more striking species of stonechat - perhaps Variegata or Armenica - which could be a noteworthy observation for Crete. Their contributed pictures - including one of Heather and Dermot (Picture 1)are below.

Can you or anyone you know help make a new Channel 4 documentary?

NO GOING BACK

ARE YOU OR ANYONE YOU KNOW SELLING THEIR HOME IN THE UK TO MOVE ABROAD AND START A NEW SMALL BUSINESS THIS SUMMER?

Due to the success of Channel 4's compelling documentary series No Going Back, Brighton based television company Ricochet South are looking for exciting stories for a new series due to be broadcast early next year in 2004.

Each programme tells a different story of people leaving the rat race behind and risking everything to transform their lives and pursue their dreams of starting a business venture overseas. It is 1 hour of prime time TV on Channel 4 so amazing publicity for the participants business venture!

Some of the stories featured in previous programmes included farming olives and grapes in scenic rural Spain, carp fishing holidays in idyllic Brittany, safaris in Zambia, and art courses in Provence.

We are particularly interested in talking to people who are planning to relocate to any of the Greek islands.

So if you are selling up and moving abroad this summer to start the business of your dreams or you know anyone who is, contact Lisa Winter at Ricochet South on +44 (0) 1273 604 792 or e-mail lisa.winter@ricochetsouth.co.uk

NEW Accommodation in Astratigos...
OPEN.  The first house on the left as you enter Astratigos - a magnificent cream and green affair sporting two balconies and a small pool at the front contains two holiday apartments.

Maybe More shortly..  Another local owner has carried out some superb traditional renovation on a ruined house - and is currently renovating what what was his own accomodation - maybe for your holidays!

The New hotel  in Kolimbari is, we believe open... If you want information visit:-

The Grand Bay Beach Hotel

 at Interdynamic's website.

Safety in the Sea.
On 22nd July three German tourists drowned and two people were reported missing at Kavros Beach, halfway between Chania & Rethymnon on the north coast of Crete.

FERRY SERVICES

Both ANEK and Blue Star Ferries have car ferry services between Souda Bay and Piraeus.

Although an obvious competitor to the resident Anek Lines the Blue Star service times do not conflict from Souda.

Anek currently leaves at 9.00pm whilst Blue Star leave at 11.30pm.

SUMMER WEATHER
Crete remains in summer mode.  If you have a holiday booked - the only brolleys you are likely to need is one to keep the sun off!

ROAD SAFETY REPEAT

Following a series of fatal accidents involving heavy goods vehicles and passenger coaches in Greece earlier this year the Traffic Police are unlikely to overlook traffic violations of any kind.  In some areas they test erring drivers not only for alcohol but also drugs.

Although there have been recent reductions in Road accidents and deaths Greece is still bottom of the EU league table

*Motorcyclists - the alcohol limit here is almost Nil.. Don't drink.

MORE FUN & SERIOUS PLEASURE PLEASE!

I offer no apologies for keeping the next paragraph - which seems to have taken root on the news  page!.....

To our visitors who have taken the time to tell us that they have found our site enjoyable/ informative/ helpful/ or otherwise complimented the site - very many thanks.  We are trying very hard and it's really good to know that you like it".  Besides, my wife notes that many of you are ladies!  Please don't stop!!

   Expected At Astratigos Soon....

          Astratigos visitor, Cretan filoxenia.

Having just waved farewell to a Venice heading Kath Leader group, we are eagerly awaiting our next visitors - Carol Jeins from Lincoln and hopefully her brother Nick - who we understand proposed to his wife Wendy right here at Cretanvista!!

We claim no responsibilty since we were away on holiday whilst our house-sitters planned their future...  Seen here is Carol Jeins at the end of her last visit with our immediate neighbour and very good friend Michaelis Paperdakis.

Earthquakes....
At  8.15am on the 14th August an earthquake measuring around 6.4 Richter occurred in the Ionian Sea just off west of the island of Lefkada, which stands just off the Pelopenese mainland on a line almost due west of Patra. At least 15 people were injured, 3 seriously - one critically.  Serious damage to some buildings and roads occurred and it was reported that the quake was felt in all Ioanian islands, which include the popular holiday destinations of Kerkyra (Corfu) and Zakinthos, and a large area of western Greece including Athens and Larissa.  A good report can be seen at the Macedonian Press Agency News for the 14th August and of course any other Greek news media for the date in question.

A look at our earthquake page will show that there have been no serious quakes for some time - the last notable (not serious) on Crete occuring in May and June last year.  No serious damage was reported.  Our own page - earthquakes - will be updated shortly to include all recent 'quakes in Greece.

Holidays sometimes go badly wrong ...
Recent press releases here about holidaying in Greece are hard to understand and explain.

A few weeks ago the Greek press apparently had a field day about public sex antics involving tour reps from a particular company from Britain in Corfu - some of whom were reported sacked.

In recent weeks in Faliraki on Rhodes a young Briton was killed when he attempted to wriggle - reportedly for a dare - under a working rubbish truck which moved and crushed him.  Link to Story.

A few days ago one young Briton lost his life - stabbed in the neck with a broken bottle by another during a brawl. One dead; one charged with his death; 10 other young Britons charged with either complicity (5) or participation in the fatal brawl and drugs offenses.   Link to Story.

The media implicated drink and drugs.....

Well, that's about it for now.....
I hope that this page and the information and news given is proving useful.  If there is anything that you would like to see - particularly if you would like a picture included - please let me know.  Magazine Editor Michael Weckert tells me that the second edition is out - FREE! Frappé Magazine - Humourous, helpful and available free at many sites around Chania and district - ask at your hotel reception.

E-Mail Requests..
I receive some brilliant e-mails - really - and they are very welcome.  But sometimes there is no acknowledgement that our answer has been received.  We don't mind, but worry occasionally that someone may not have received an answer from us and think the worse of us!  We will ALWAYS reply to e-mail so please, if you have mailed us and not received an answer - resend your mail - we didn't get it or have somehow overlooked it.
Our response time is usually within 48 hours.

Personal Information..
We have been asked in the past to help locate people. We would love to be able to assist but regret that are unable to do this.  There is fuller comment in previous issues of CV News.

Questions and Answers..
Quite a lot of questions are received here at Cretanvista and, as with e-mails and other forms of communication, we do our best to supply valid answers.  We never respond "Off the Top of our Heads" but always research the answer - even if we already have one (things change) before passing the information on.  We provide links to appropriate alternative sources where we have them.  The answers are given with the proviso that recipients are responsible for any action taken by them.

Book Reviews.
Because each book review is original - we steal nothing from the book covers or the reviews of others - it takes a little longer to deal with each.  No point our reviewing the reviews when what readers really want to know about is the content! 'Books and good reading'.

Bird Watchers.
Paul Smiths bird watching diary page went up on time and hopefully Paul is well into his August sightings.  He is also preparing to meet with yet another bird watching enthusiast here on holiday right now.  Hopefully we will have a report on this visit and maybe a few more photographs in a short while.

Book Reviews - No change this month.
The last recent review -  'Moments of Cretan Nature' by Anastasios Sakoulis, (ISBN: 960-91979-0-6) "Stigmotipa Tis Kritikis Freesis" in Greek -  is a super book with some magnificent photographs.  Our review is accompanied by a small photo gallery - our first review to do so.  Our site pictures (from the book) are, we think, nice!  The printed pictures in the book are in almost all cases very much bigger, nicer!

Books and Good Reading - Moments in Cretan Nature

Reviews in Preparation...
'
Eleni' by Nicolas Gage.  Published by Harvill - (ISBN 1 86046 346 0) first published 1983.  Reprinted.

This is his true story of a son seeking to avenge his mothers murder by ELAS Guerillas during the Greek civil war.  It is real.  It is compelling.  It is harrowing in the extreme.  It reveals the Greek psych as nothing I have ever read.  But, unless you have no feelings, it could haunt you forever......  'Eleni' (in preparation).

Can this be you.....or yours?
Every so often when I am out and about taking photographs I come across someone who could be you - or something which could be yours (or theirs!!).  Maybe passing in the opposite direction on a full tandem bicycle (yes, that happened); an unattended car with foreign plates; something which catches my eye and leaves me not knowing......... Either there was no one to ask or they were moving too quickly!  I thought that perhaps site visitors might like to see or be able to help identify one or two 'unknowns' which have left me wondering who, or what I have missed.   Can this be yours?
