JULY WEATHER.....  Some like it hot! Very hot!! The 30's and 40's (and we don't mean the year!) were very much on the cards as things got very much warmer. But then perhaps that is our 'Raison d'être'. Best to stay out of the sun unless well protected...

                             Plaster, plaster, on the wall....

Which is the plaster to beat them all? And will it all be done before our holidays are over at Christmas?

Astratigos Village Life.... Getting some.. XIV
(Continued from June - Previous click here).

At the end the last episode...
....
Plus that posed a very, very, interesting question. Assuming for a moment that our agent's explanation was absolutely accurate, and that the rains in Spain - sorry - Crete, would run down inside the roof tiles and eventually balloon down and burst into the roof space, sinking my wife and family and my entire ship, why would no rain penetrate the completely unprotected roof tiles, but leak through felt covered ones?.........

But, whatever the truth of the matter, one thing seemed certain, not having the protection of the felt, and supposedly the associated boarding, would not have cost any more. Or any less, depending upon one's point of view....

And there were now more pressing points which needed to be pursued. Particularly as the plasterer and his mate were now getting on with the job in hand - plastering! It always seemed a bit of a curios sport to me (although I did once plaster a small bathroom). First you sort of 'flick' a trowel-full of the wet plaster at the intended area of the wall - where it somehow miraculously landed and stayed 'stuck' - in strips about a couple of inches wide and a couple of feet apart, and then smoothed the strips level across the wall. Then, after a little hardening, just fill in the spaces and use a piece of wood to scrape the gaps level...

All of which sounds easy enough, though a bit messy and lots of clearing up, but then, after 'plastering' the whole area - new house; courtyard; walls involved and the like, the whole process was repeated with a 'finishing' coat. To make everything smooth... In other words, you do the job twice.

But then we didn't need to worry about the second coat, the 'finish', as we would be safely in the UK for our Christmas break when that event occurred. And the first coat, it had to be admitted, did look good, even at that stage. Wet and sticky for a while maybe, but good...

Then our next account - more like a brief note of what had been spent and what was left (and by implication what was 'owing') arrived. It was then that we noticed an anomaly. It seemed that our agent had added our amounts due, including his interest at 15%, to the total amounts due, and then had added the interest.. We puzzled over that for a while, and then asked for a conference.

He seemed genuinely puzzled himself when we pointed out that if he totaled the interest having already included it we would be paying the same interest twice! We all went over the same ground at least twice before he declared that he would have to get his partner to check the figures. He did. The result was that he owed us a sum of money which came to, all things being even and including what we had in the bank, enough to pay off the plasterer and get a set of wrought-iron railings made and fitted around the first floor balcony wall. Our glee was, to say the least, unsuppressed...

We should have known better....

At the time it seem one of the best pieces of news for a long time. Free money! Well, that was just the euphoria. As we all know
, there is no such thing as a free lunch. But right now, for us, there most certainly was. We even located the tradesman who would do the railing job and made sure that the price was right. We were looking, we thought at a double whammy. A completed newly plastered house and new railing all around the first floor balcony. Magic! Couldn't wait to get them painted. We discussed and agreed all with everyone concerned and departed for the UK with a sense of a job well done (and paid for).. 'Christmas is a comin in, a comin in, a comin in!! Bring on the turkey, don't spare the pud - stick a bit of holly on'....

Meanwhile the plasterer plastered. Arches, square doorways, large windows, small windows. It felt like play-school reborn. After all the trials and tribulations, the seriously good and seriously bad times, our dream of the sunshine was approaching the final stages of reality.  And, for once, just this once maybe, we were quid's in. It was nearly time to go to the ball. We could safely enjoy our Christmas festivities for the first time in several years...

After a lifetime of work we had reached retirement in the middle of what had seemed like an avalanche of perpetual problems. Well, we had taken them all on, beaten them down, and now it was our turn. Our dream was so close to being reality that nothing, but nothing, could stop us now.

We were home and dry, all bar the shouting - weren't we?....

And yet the province of Chania...
Which includes the Samaria Gorge, the longest and deepest in Europe, attracts thousand of tourists of all ages every year. Not all of course 'do' the gorge, as there is an abundance of other desirable activities, but it is perhaps as well to remember that the Crete has a hostile side. Care will repay amply with superbly enjoyable holidays...

Although earthquakes most certainly are a common feature of life in Greece. It is however, unusual for deaths, injuries and or damage to buildings to occur, which could lead to a false sense of security.

The author of a ten year study at the National Technical University of Athens says that Greece is sitting waiting for the next major earthquake without doing anything to mitigate it's effects. (Our italics).

A Little Extra (Current) News - 'Ye Olde Curiosity Shoppe'....
Always a sucker for a 'real' bargain, July, getting hotter by the minute here on Crete, had me reaching for the itch (bite) cream even before I had been bitten! Well it's no good hoping that your bite won't itch afterwards, it will! and it will, and it will... Forever probably! No, best get the stocks in now, whilst the going is still good...

And get enough to last, if you run out in the middle of itching - a very regular occurrence for most people I suspect, you will start itching all over again (DON'T SCRATCH!!!). Just talking about it is enough, maybe just thinking about it?.....

So let's start with a cure that I know works - 'Lanacane'. Oh' dear me no - you can't get Lanacane in Greece - sorry.  OK then, my old favourite and very definite (for at least 12 hours) itch stopper, 'Eurax' - even Boots Chemists will sell that to a general dogsbody without prescription or 40 minute verbal questionnaire by a pharmacy assistant. Maybe so, but not here in Greece they won't. Or rather can't, as it isn't imported...

OK, if I get bitten I will suck out the poison (beware bee stings - you might end up eating one and going into anaphylactic shock and becoming dead - after the agonizing part!

But before that could happen, a tourist, listening to my woes, handed me a brand new tube. Well, more a box really, of Lanacane. Gratis! Thank you God - you did hear me after all. I couldn't wait to get it open. It looked big. To an 'itcher' it looked vast! Superbly and eye scathingly coloured - reds, blacks, white and yellow mustard! It was in English too 'LANACANE' the box proclaimed, 'Stops Itching Fast'... That's me, I thought, give. As very fast as you can...

To cut a long story short, the box measured 26.5cm square (12.5x6.8x3.1cm) - about 60ml by volume.
OK - about a third of a half-pint glass.. Or a couple of big bars of chocolate. Or maybe the equivalent of 5 Mars Bars! Maybe more, maybe less...  Depends on what you expect... Let me try to help - from the size of the box I expected to find maybe two 20/30cc tubes. Two good sized tubes of toothpaste maybe. Imagine then my itchy panic when I opened the box to find what seemed to be one small sized tube of cream (20gm) in what I had expected to contain at least 200ml - like sun tan cream!  That's a good sized bottle! possibly weighing 7ounces or so... 20gms would weigh only 70% or so of one ounce! Less than one ounce anyway..

So where did my anticipated 7 times that go?!  Poof! it never existed. That big box was mostly air, and that doesn't weigh a lot at all. Bulk-wise the box was much bigger than the itch cream it came in!

But then, just when PM Papandreou looked like winning the battle for money - including some of mine, things took another down-turn. Don't they always? I noticed that my 335 ml bottle of 'Optifree Express' (contact lens fluid) had become a 300ml bottle of 'Optifree Replenish' - that's 18% less, and that the price had risen by 2€ - a month. All pharmacists said the same thing - yes it had. The old one is now discontinued. So why is the American manufacturer still selling it? Or have I just seen a 10% plus price hike? Neat!

And, getting into my swing, why will Cadbury's Roses chocolates, at least the version I can buy in the UK, now contain only 850gm - against the old 975gm - (that's 11 fewer chocolates) 12% + less in future? Cadbury, now owned by Us cheese-maker Kraft, reportedly says that the price of cocoa has risen from £900 per ton (in 2006) to £2000 per ton now. One could perhaps be forgiven for believing that 975gm was perhaps too close to 1000gm for comfort?.... Better down than up! But then, watch your weight, it may be costing you a lot more than eating chocolates would. Spoilsports are everywhere!

But, and this - I really would like a recent 'Daily Mail' report to answer me this - 'Pradaxa' - an anticoagulant drug treatment, has been given a preliminary opinion from 'NICE' - that it is too expensive at £919 per month (per patient). It does seem horrendously expensive. But then a correspondent says that a month's prescription of 'Pradaxa' in Spain costs only around £140 per month. There may well be serious discrepancies here between the two organisations involved which need explaining. But one can only ask why this is so, why no comparisons are available, especially since someone's life, or at least well being, may be depend on it....

We are in the EEC - economic or not.....

Photo Galleries...
Calendar Photo Galleries:
A new one every year for the past decade! The 2010 Calendar gallery is complete and online now.. The 2009 calendar topic was 'Wild Flowers of Crete' (after our wild flower galleries) and the result was superb!  Which is why we followed up the theme in 2010. And again in 2011! Because of our success we have already produced our 2012 wild flower calendar format (and our other themes continue), but of course that is not available until later in the year. But we can reprint any issue with the next year's dates - whatever year that happens to be! Have a look at the 2011 wild flowers calendar Link.

Wild Flower Gallery - Now at 360 different wild flower photographs online - plus dozens in preparation - Galleries 13 - 15 are open. 360 flowers online. Gallery 16 is developing - which will mean 384 online..  Plus we have added more reference information on redesigned pages - with more photos of each specimen to follow later. You may find an occasional duplicate, which we are keeping for the moment as the actual photographs will be different and will be used in a later planned re-organization of the galleries.

We are now well en-route to putting the first 50% of our target 1020 individual flowers on-line. But it all takes time. First find the flower (hopefully in full bloom); then get the photographs (sounds easy); put the photographs on-line (simply work); with basic information on each, making certain that it is accurate...

If you know the location of a rare flower please don't hesitate to help us photograph - we wont reveal your information to anyone else.

Please note also that All flower galleries have now been successfully re-coded to eliminate a bug which affected some Firefox browser versions. All the information will remain online at Cretanvista. With the advent of ipods, ipads, Blackberry's and other gizmos it will be much easier to take Cretanvista galleries on your field trips - and all the information that goes with them. **Your Amazon Kindle will display cretanvista perfectly.

Wildlife Gallery - the first two pages - 48 unique photographs, including some rare specimens of the Cretan fauna. Some is quite beautiful, some a bit scary/creepy, but all now add to our wildlife page and the ornithology gallery pages.  Remember that it is always worth checking where you walk or sit before you do! Start here.

Chania Photo Gallery.
Our Chania photograph galleries commenced with a presentation from Klaus Dieter Thill, whose photographs of some old buildings in the area of the Venetian Harbour show a little of what we all sometimes miss. Have a look - it's worth it. Start here.

Miniature Chapels of Crete Gallery.
Klaus-Dieter Thill - author of  Minaturkapellen auf Krista, a printed photo album detailing some of those enigmatic roadside shrines of Crete, has now contributed the first page of his Chania on-line gallery.

Cretan Art and crafts - Weaving pages...
Weaving is in full swing and natural dyes are being made up and the photographs taken to add to this section. We will be adding our
pages on our new looms, equipment and new projects started as soon as we can. The weaving tends to take the time right now..

Our very first nature gallery...
Contributed by Anastasios Sakoulis, whose book on Cretan wildlife Moments of Cretan Nature is also on our site as a book review.  Anastasios contributed 18 pictures of birds for addition to a gallery some time ago now. We will attach these to our bird-watching pages as soon as possible.

GENERAL: There are now 37 galleries featuring aspects of Cretan life, including sunrise and sunset pictures; Souda Bay War Cemetery; the gallery of magnificent wild-life pictures by Anastasios Sakoulis; our own wildlife gallery; the wild flowers; Chania; Mhlia (Milia) traditional village; etc.. etc...

Our improvements continue. We sincerely hope that you notice little - apart from increased enjoyment and ease of use. Keep visiting - your presence is what make all worthwhile.

Can this be you..... or yours... or mine?.. This Month - Wilf B.
Every so often when I am out and about taking photographs I come across someone who could be you - or something which could be yours (or theirs!!).  Maybe passing in the opposite direction on a full tandem bicycle (yes, that happened); an unattended car with foreign plates; something which catches my eye and leaves me not knowing......... Either there was no one to ask or they were moving too quickly!  I thought that perhaps site visitors might like to see or be able to help identify one or two 'unknowns' which have left me wondering who, or what I have missed.   This may have been you?.....
