MAY WEATHER.....  Warming up nicely now - it feels like an age since our last spell of seriously hot and settled weather, but from the current trend it looks like it is on the way. Just don't forget a good sweater if you are coming on holiday - evenings can be very cool...

                            Our previous dining room roof...

Left more than a little something to be desired - and of course wasn't going to be a great deal of use in bad weather! But then, even with the new roof completed and our first 'sideboard' installed - dispensing with the brolley would not help much - there were no doors and windows! Read below...

(Continued from April - Previous click here).

At the end the last episode...
....
If only I had known then what I know now. Isn't that always the case? But gelding remains good! Very good!.......

But, for better or worse, the roof was on. The efforts of our roofer, assisted by our own agent, were finished. All had not gone swimmingly towards the end, when the ridge tiles were being mortared into place by the roofer, because he ran very short of mortar and the ridges were most definitely neither straight or level. The fact that the mortar had been coloured to match the tiles couldn't hide the misalignment - or more especially - the fact that the central ridge was lower than the ends of the others, creating a sort of low 'u'. But the roof was on - and the interior beams and ceiling rot proofed and varnished. It looked good. Hopefully it would never leak...

More to the point, at the time, was the fact that we could now remove our temporary 'roof' from our (plastic) dining table and eat in the 'big' room regularly. The scaffolding would have to come out - most of it anyway. We still needed one full height set, complete with boards as a piece of 'functioning' furniture!  'Functioning' in that we could stand things on the lower level - our battery powered radio, our kerosene lantern and all those other commodities which would normally be placed on a sideboard - normally, here, in these circumstances, anyway. A sideboard!...

But wow, what a sideboard! With an eighteen feet high steel frame with two working platforms about four feet wide, made from 1.5" thick solid pine around 6-8 feet long. It most have weighed at least half a ton. But then it also sported huge heavy duty wheels. Ask yourself, in all seriousness, where could you get a sideboard like that? B&Q - never! Wickes - building department maybe, but it wouldn't be labeled 'Furniture' much less 'Sideboard'. No, this one may have looked unusual, and maybe had no cupboards, but it could support a ton or two - plus maybe two builders with buckets of mortar no sweat - and it was mobile! Bespoke! Stop me and buy one!! But make sure that you have an eighteen feet high room to put it in first....

Back from the euphoria of the new roof and successfully completing the rot-proofing and varnishing, against the odds, reality loomed once again. We were still living in what sometimes seemed to be a cardboard replica of a Sudanese refugee camp, or so it felt, with no doors or windows in the front house; the plastering yet to commence in that area; the first floor mezzanine still a drawing on a plan, though RSJ's were now in place upon which to place the floor of that structure; no electricity and only the rudimentary unscreeded concrete floor, the finish anything but level and seriously dust-prone.

But, the shell of the new front-house was up, the roof was on, the exposed beams and ceilings treated and not least, we had the bespoke, utterly magic 'sideboard'. What more could a man (or woman) desire?.....
A completed renovation for £40,000 + perhaps. As originally put to us by our agent maybe... We had already had to accept that particular eventuality as unattainable before we started the present phase. A phase we started with an estimate from our agent that completion of the whole project would not take the total costs to more than £60 - £65,000. That would make the final amount something in the region of £20,000 - £25,000 over budget. Looking at where we were with progress didn't fill us with much faith in miracles. More a faith that completion would depend totally on the depth of our wallet...

We recognised, however, that sour grapes, however well justified they may have been, were not the answer. We still had our dream to complete - the nightmare of possible failure to ward off. And the bill was still climbing, the clock ticking. We needed to get the door and window frames fitted as soon as we could so that the plasterer could start work... A winter without doors and windows was not an appealing proposition - there was absolutely no form of heating - apart maybe from gas appliances and, believe it or not, our 300Watt Tilley lamp. That gave us so much light that night, according to neighbours, became day! It also gave off a fair amount of heat, but could hardly heat a whole house of this size,

It also had a serious disadvantage. Although portable, moving it with one to, for example, the loo - so as not to fall over the raised floor drains or sit upon something which might, and most likely would, bite if sat upon, was not an option. That would mean leaving ones companions in the dark - or candle light - pending a return. Or possibly knocking the thing over and thereby setting fire to the only loo we had. At least we had fitted a plastic seat to ours, it would probably burn quite nicely encouraged by an exploding kerosene lamp.

Such an event would leave the privy seat less - but then that was the way our agent, who had the loo fitted, had seen fit to leave it originally. Seat savers unite!!  Soon...

A Little Extra (Current) News....
The Battle of Crete commenced on the 21st May, 1941. The Battle was between the invading German forces of WWII and the defending British garrison commanded by
Major-General Bernard Freyberg. He was a charismatic and much decorated General who commanded the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary force and the New Zealand 2nd Division during WWII. Bernard Freyberg interestingly also commanded the New Zealanders who liberated Venice, which has powerful historical links with Crete, in 1944. His command of the British forces on Crete did, of course, lead to defeat in 1941, when the German paratroop forces gained a foothold on the airfield at Maleme..

2011 marked the 70th Anniversary of the Battle, which was particularly hard fought in the area of Maleme (Chania provence) and lasted for 10 days. The British forces sustained casualties of 5479 - 3579 Killed and 1900 wounded against the German forces casualty numbers  of 6681 - 2124 Killed, 2640 wounded and 1914 missing presumed killed. The numbers are disputed by both sides - just as the command of the Island was disputed at the time, but that the battle was fierce cannot be disputed. Two well visited military cemeteries - the Allied War Cemetery at Souda Bay and the German War Cemetery at Maleme - lie in poignant witness to the dead and veterans of both armies and family members still visit - 70 years on.

Deputy editors Ann and Richard  brought us a very nice surprise and very welcome  visitor to Astratigos on 3rd of May. Christina Tolliver - spending six weeks in north-western Crete. Christina comes from Sedona. Arizona, USA. A very long way from our rear patio! Only 113 miles or so from Phoenix, maybe 280 miles from Las Vegas and around 500 miles from Los Angeles however!  Sedona is apparently known as 'Red Rock Country' - looking at some of their publicity photographs it seems very clear why that is. And Crete's Samaria Gorge would be absolutely lost in their canyon. Have a look here Sedona USA and have a good look at their videos & webcam. Stunning scenery, lots to do - but a long way from Crete , or to go there maybe....

We send our best regards to Christina, who is by now safely back in Sedona, and thank her for a very interesting morning - and also of course for the Cretanvista photo-shoot - we hope that she approves! Click photo for larger image.

By the middle of May things were beginning to warm up and the 17th saw the arrival of two of our old friends, Bob and Hilary McDonald from Hedon, Hull UK.  Their UK home is our favourite stopping-off point when we either arrive or depart the UK by road via the King George Dock at the port of Hull. Always the best company, food and the chance of a pint of Guinness at Bob's local.. Returning the compliment is the least we can do, and both being 'Geordies' always make their stay here a very pleasurable event. Mind, for a couple of years we have forsaken P&O (Hull - Zeebrugge) for Stenna Lines (Harwich - Hook of Holland) so we don't stay in Hull quite so often now.

The so very stunning performance of the Red Arrows aerobatic team was also a very special event for us, coming as we do from Waddington, Lincoln, UK. Waddington still has an active RAF base about a mile away from our home in the old village. It is now an AWACS base, but was previously the last active Avro Vulcan base in the UK. Watching a Vulcan doing it's pre-air show display before flying off to another air show performance was an event not be missed - stunning every time. I often wondered if it could out-maneuver a Red Arrow! For good reason, the 'Reds', based at RAF Scampton, often gave part of their display at the Waddington Air Show right over our back-garden, sometimes the wrong way up!

And not only that, later this year they are due to up sticks and move to Waddington, which (by air) must be all of 20 - 30 seconds away. A good wide vertical loop from one airfield should get them to the other...

And even more - Kirsty Moore (Flt Lt Kirsty Moore - RAF) was born at Nocton Hall Lincs, only a couple of miles from our Waddington home; was brought up in Coleby - the next village - about two miles down the A607; and was educated at Stamford High School, Lincs - my wife's old school!  Why is that exciting? Well, if Kirsty Moore can do it, how about giving Pam a go!? Now, anyone know where can I get one of these for a woman driver?

Photo Galleries...
Calendar Photo Galleries:
A new one every year for the past decade! The 2010 Calendar gallery is complete and online now.. The 2009 calendar topic was 'Wild Flowers of Crete' (after our wild flower galleries) and the result was superb!  Which is why we followed up the theme in 2010. And again in 2011! Because of our success we have already produced our 2012 wild flower calendar format (and our other themes continue), but of course that is not available until later in the year. But we can reprint any issue with the next year's dates - whatever year that happens to be! Have a look at the 2011 wild flowers calendar Link.

Wild Flower Gallery - Now at 360 different wild flower photographs online - plus dozens in preparation - Galleries 13 - 15 are open. 360 flowers online. Gallery 16 is developing - which will mean 384 online..  Plus we have added more reference information on redesigned pages - with more photos of each specimen to follow later. You may find an occasional duplicate, which we are keeping for the moment as the actual photographs will be different and will be used in a later planned re-organization of the galleries.

We are now well en-route to putting the first 50% of our target 1020 individual flowers on-line. But it all takes time. First find the flower (hopefully in full bloom); then get the photographs (sounds easy); put the photographs on-line (simply work); with basic information on each, making certain that it is accurate...

If you know the location of a rare flower please don't hesitate to help us photograph - we wont reveal your information to anyone else.

Please note also that All flower galleries have now been successfully re-coded to eliminate a bug which affected some Firefox browser versions. All the information will remain online at Cretanvista. With the advent of ipods, ipads, Blackberry's and other gizmos it will be much easier to take Cretanvista galleries on your field trips - and all the information that goes with them. **Your Amazon Kindle will display cretanvista perfectly.

Wildlife Gallery - the first two pages - 48 unique photographs, including some rare specimens of the Cretan fauna. Some is quite beautiful, some a bit scary/creepy, but all now add to our wildlife page and the ornithology gallery pages.  Remember that it is always worth checking where you walk or sit before you do! Start here.

Chania Photo Gallery.
Our Chania photograph galleries commenced with a presentation from Klaus Dieter Thill, whose photographs of some old buildings in the area of the Venetian Harbour show a little of what we all sometimes miss. Have a look - it's worth it. Start here.

Miniature Chapels of Crete Gallery.
Klaus-Dieter Thill - author of  Minaturkapellen auf Krista, a printed photo album detailing some of those enigmatic roadside shrines of Crete, has now contributed the first page of his Chania on-line gallery.

Cretan Art and crafts - Weaving pages...
Weaving is in full swing and natural dyes are being made up and the photographs taken to add to this section. We will be adding our
pages on our new looms, equipment and new projects started as soon as we can. The weaving tends to take the time right now..

Our very first nature gallery...
Contributed by Anastasios Sakoulis, whose book on Cretan wildlife Moments of Cretan Nature is also on our site as a book review.  Anastasios contributed 18 pictures of birds for addition to a gallery some time ago now. We will attach these to our bird-watching pages as soon as possible.

GENERAL: There are now 37 galleries featuring aspects of Cretan life, including sunrise and sunset pictures; Souda Bay War Cemetery; the gallery of magnificent wild-life pictures by Anastasios Sakoulis; our own wildlife gallery; the wild flowers; Chania; Mhlia (Milia) traditional village; etc.. etc...

Our improvements continue. We sincerely hope that you notice little - apart from increased enjoyment and ease of use. Keep visiting - your presence is what make all worthwhile.

Can this be you..... or yours... or mine?.. This Month - Wilf B.
Every so often when I am out and about taking photographs I come across someone who could be you - or something which could be yours (or theirs!!).  Maybe passing in the opposite direction on a full tandem bicycle (yes, that happened); an unattended car with foreign plates; something which catches my eye and leaves me not knowing......... Either there was no one to ask or they were moving too quickly!  I thought that perhaps site visitors might like to see or be able to help identify one or two 'unknowns' which have left me wondering who, or what I have missed.   This could be you - but how do you do that?!

  Chania Crete - Perception Test!
How many people are on the bike?

Until next month, best wishes from here on Crete. WB.
