Astratigos Village Life....(continued from last month).... Link

As the new day dawned...
I had absolutely no idea of the excitement to come. Had I had so much of an inkling, I would have vanished too...

First there was the ward shift change - the night staff became day staff, Adonis swapped with Pam, several other patient relatives changed too. The sunshine beamed in through the windows beside my bed. The nurses did their drug & TPR/BP rounds. The tea man arrived (' I know you are English - milk and sugar?) The doctors did their round and I moaned on about when could I go home.... Boring...

Except for the relatives of other patients talking animatedly to each other and to all the relatives of other patients - a little distraction from ones situation at least.

Kyrie G, In the bed next to mine, regularly attempted to leave. He was a little confused his daughter explained - the medics had changed his drugs and these were having obvious effects on his behaviour. Confused aggression! At 80 plus years old... A magnificent Cretan doing what Cretans do best - resist oppression!

Tucked in sheets; cot-sides; soothing words; nothing was working except his quick-witted daughter and very large and muscular son. Out of the bed, side-stepped his daughter, was blocked by his son and threw a magnificent right to his son's chin!  'Thwack' - a perfect punch!! His son simply smothered all further attacks  with his bulk and returned his father to bed. Nurses gave him a sedative injection. The situation deteriorated rapidly. Instead of slowing down Kyrie G went faster. His daughter was in tears. His son restraining his father physically.  More nurses - another injection - an accelerating 80 year old! Then he seemed to become sedate and everyone began to relax. Always a mistake.....

The sudden, piercing unearthly scream shattered the gathering calm. Kyrie X, in the bed directly opposite mine, had arrested! His heart stopped. His relatives panicked and there was a sudden flurry of nurses attending the patient and herding all relatives out of the ward. A female doctor arrived complete with a crash trolley within, I still believe, 20 seconds or so....

The doctor did her thing.. I almost wished she hadn't. Kyrie X suddenly sat bolt upright from the waist and let out another unearthly scream - directly facing me, before collapsing back to the prone position. I couldn't move - it seemed almost slow motion.  My own heart was racing.. The resuscitation worked at the third attempt and life was about to return to normal, when the Cretan Warrior in the bed on my left also surfaced again - and began to climb over the cot sides on his bed! There was no one to stop him!

The medic and remaining nurse were a bit tied up... It looked like the only 'expert' around was me!!  I rolled upright facing his bed, precariously balanced on the edge of my own and did the only thing I could think of....

'Sshhhhhh' - feeling a total fool whilst playing at 'balance on your bed edge with one almost useless arm and leg' was a little anxiety provoking. Kyrie G falling over his bed rail and maybe fracturing a femur, which at his age could kill him, whilst I played sissy was not an option I could live with... If I managed to distract him I might not have to. But one right hook to my jaw like the one he had delivered to his son might have finished my own proceedings completely! 'Sshhhhhh'...

Kyrie G stared hard at me. But he stopped climbing.  More was required... I raised my good arm (which was propping me up) and put my index finger to my lips, rotating my eyes towards the doctor in what I thought was a conspiratorial way... 'Sshhhhhh'.  I wobbled precariously as Kyrie G got my message, managed to lower his cot side quietly and stood facing me....  'Fall backwards', I told myself, 'onto the bed - it won't hurt that way'! When his curiosity wore off I would definitely be an agenda item... But at least my departure would be at the hands of a real Cretan warrior. One couldn't ask for more.

'Milate Anglikka' I managed to stammer (in famous last words mode). Do you speak English?... "Germanikka"? (German?) he demanded. 'Preparing my dispatch', I thought hopelessly. The next answer would decide my fate and he did not look as if he was in waiting mode...

I never needed an answer. A nurse appeared - obviously summoned by her colleagues - bearing yet another syringe and accompanied by Kyrie G's son.  I fell backwards onto my bed as he received his third injection of the day. And promptly fell asleep.

I was discharged next day. Kyrie G was still asleep. His daughter thanked me for my 'intervention'... 'It was a nothing' I said truthfully - ' your father is a real Cretan warrior'.... 'And I am still alive', I thought!

MAY WEATHER ....
Summer has officially arrived. Our previous belief that summer was just around the corner is proven..... But it was more like an English summer with unpredictable rainstorms - and some serious flooding during the w/e 18th and 19th...

Marbles, I said that "you might just be forgiven for thinking that the possible talks on loan to Greece of the Parthenon (Acropolis) marbles might just be a case of double jeopardy! A Little Extra News

One of the great privileges of this column is that the news editor of the day can fill it with his or her own observations on anything at all - as long as it is about Crete.

Getting here; going where; doing what; for how long; is it good or bad?  Indeed it seems like manna from heaven. So why say anything at all?  Well, questions need answers, don't they?

An extremely good question, especially when one remembers the news flurry in March last year when two British expatriates, Terry and Josephine Johnson from Newlyn, Cornwall, were found stabbed and strangled to death at their new home in Almyrida,  near Chania, Crete.

Their 33 year old son, Ryan, was charged with their murder soon afterwards. All, quite rightly and in accordance with the law, became relatively silent.

A little while later Ryan, who always protested his innocence, was released on police bail of 20.000 euros - his passport confiscated and ordered not to leave Crete.

Now, more than a year after these tragic events, the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) in London published news of the end of the saga, as charges against Ryan were dropped (Link to Story).  Although the Greek prosecutor had 30 days to appeal the dropping of charges this is reported to be unlikely.

I have personally seen no comment in the English language papers in Crete - perhaps I have simply missed it - that is quite possible. But the BBC reports have followed the story since it's inception - including the fact that the bodies of Mr. & Mrs. Johnson - which had been transferred back to Britain - had incurred a 'storage' charge by the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust of ₤2,200 - later waived because of the 'exceptional' circumstances (Link).

Perhaps more to the point that I am making about the lack of comment, the absence of reported dialogue about these murders on Crete - is that the Johnsons did not murder each other... If that simple fact is accepted, then it must also be accepted that someone else did.

That being the case one can only ask the obvious question - what is being done to find out who did?  Living on a small island with such a small population, excepting the summer visitors, it seems strange that there appears to be no idea who the person or persons responsible may be.

It is a somewhat unsettling question, which has probably led to more locked doors on Crete, where some of the older people cannot remember ever having them locked, than at any previous time.

Our sympathies must of course go to the families of Terry and Josephine Johnson.  The question must remain....

A Little Site News - But no new additions this month...

But what we already have isn't at all bad -
judging by the 27000 plus (and rising) monthly unique visitor figures to Cretanvista websites.  But taking nothing for granted, we are all hard at work - working on updates and getting out and about - obtaining the new information and photographs we need to keep Cretanvista well to the forefront of websites about Crete. Two new galleries - our nature gallery and the WWII museum at Askyfou are progressing well. We treasure our visitors...Really!

Cretan Art and crafts - Weaving...
Our updated hand-weaving page is now on-line. This revision includes the first full project - start to finish!  A beautiful traditional craft producing beautiful products. And much more to follow.

Photo Galleries
Bird Galleries
:  Gallery Page 4 Online...
The first pages of our bird photograph gallery went on line in March 2006. Colin Turvey's Cretan Bird-Life photograph gallery (see February 2006 News) now has a fourth page. We are now working hard on adding page 5 - another 12 of Colin's bird photographs - which will bring the number up to 60 so far. A big plus for Cretanvista.

Wild Flowers
: Now 216 different wild flowers.
99% of photos have been taken right here at the base of the Rodopos peninsula. We are continually working on these galleries and will, as soon as practicable, be adding further online pages, including detailed reference pages and more photos of each specimen. We will be publishing our book - but all the information will remain on line.

Cretan Countryside:
The basic page is already on-line - has been so for some time.  In the background we have been busy collecting more photographs and will very soon be publishing the first gallery. There really is some superb wild life on Crete.

March has seen the Cretan countryside continue it's very, very, early Start.  It seems that almost every wild flower on Crete is in bloom. The birds and the bees, to say nothing of the beetles and lizards abound. The sheep are being moved to their summer pastures.  The previously tiny bouncing lambs and goat kids are now growing rapidly. The Sun shined most of the time!

No Change - Still in line.
Anastasios Sakoulis, who contributed the magnificent gallery from his book on Cretan wildlife Moments of Cretan Nature to our site,  has also contributed 18 pictures of birds for addition to a gallery. We will attach this to Paul Smith's bird-watching page in the near future.

But that isn't all...
Anastasios Sakoulis has also given us permission (and supplied the photographs) to produce a gallery of his latest book. A book of 20 superb postcards of Cretan wildlife called Naturally... Crete

Miniature Chapels of Crete.
A first!
Klaus-Dieter Thill - author of  Minaturkapellen auf Krista, a real photo album detailing some of those enigmatic roadside shrines of Crete. Klaus has supplied photographs for this gallery which is now on-line here at Cretanvista. There will also be, of course, a review the book - which we have already. Klaus is not keen on that as the book is not publicly available, but we hope to persuade him!

Klaus is working on some photographs of Chania and if all goes well we will be publishing these.

Calendar Photo Galleries:
A new one every year! The 2006 gallery is, of course, on-line (LINK) and the 2007 Calendar gallery is as good as complete. We are already arguing the topic selection for this year's 2008 gallery!

GENERAL: There are now 13 galleries featuring aspects of Cretan life, including sunrise and sunset pictures; Souda Bay War Cemetery; and the gallery of magnificent wild-life pictures by Anastasios Sakoulis, author of  "Stigmotipa Tis Kritikis Freesis" (Moments of Cretan Nature); our infant gallery about house renovation; and of course our annual calendar galleries containing 60 or so pictures of north western Crete about to increase by 12 - for 2007.

Meanwhile, with the commencement of the holiday season upon us, we will be out and about with our cameras. Watch this space - very, very carefully. Remember that you might just be in it!!

E-Mail Requests..
We receive some brilliant e-mails - really - and they are very welcome.  But sometimes there is no acknowledgement that our answer has been received.  We don't mind, but worry occasionally that someone may not have received an answer from us and think the worse of us!  We will ALWAYS reply to e-mail so please, if you have mailed us and not received an answer - resend your mail - we didn't get it or have somehow overlooked it.

Questions and Answers..
Quite a lot of questions are received here at  Cretanvista and, as with e-mails and other forms of communication, we do our best to supply valid answers.  We never respond "Off the Top of our Heads" but always research the answer - even if we already have one (things change) before passing the information on.  We provide links to appropriate alternative sources where we have them.  The answers are given with the proviso that recipients are responsible for any action taken by them.

Guest Book.  E-mail links are accepted.  Website URL, Bulletin board and chat-room style links are not.  Website links are removed automatically to prevent inclusion of sites without agreement.

The Cretan Vista Calendar Photos - Birds.
We trying to build a specialist calendar of birds - whilst we are building our own library photographs - contributions are always welcome. They will always be acknowledged and copyright will remain your own.

(Please email us before sending pictures).

Bird Watchers.
Paul Smith's MAY is on line at all Cretanvista URL's.

We remain deeply indebted to Han and Inger van der Lelie, 3815 PV Amersfoort, who enabled us to publish the June 2005 page of Paul's unbroken series.

BUT, we are now working on a solution to this particular indebtedness, not just hoping that one will pop out of the Cretan countryside!  We had hoped that perhaps Han and Inger would return to Crete - we know that Paul would just love to meet the couple who took over his page - and then skipped the country whilst he was still hospitalised!

We would love to know how the bird watching has progressed since this starlit beginning......

Can this be you.....or yours?.. This Month - Wilf B.
Every so often when I am out and about taking photographs I come across someone who could be you - or something which could be yours (or theirs!!).  Maybe passing in the opposite direction on a full tandem bicycle (yes, that happened); an unattended car with foreign plates; something which catches my eye and leaves me not knowing......... Either there was no one to ask or they were moving too quickly!  I thought that perhaps site visitors might like to see or be able to help identify one or two 'unknowns' which have left me wondering who, or what I have missed.   Can this be you?
