Astratigos Village Life.... 'Happenings'...

Since we first arrived here in Astratigos, which seems like a lifetime ago, but in fact is only 14 years, our lives have been full of 'happenings'. Most have been hilariously funny (you just need a sense of humour), a few a little serious in nature, and a thankfully very small number have been times of incredible sadness. People don't usually associate living in the sunshine with the darker side of life, but like all the other times we have, it does take it's turn.

One of the first 'happenings' was the arrival of a couple of middle aged holiday-makers
from Nottingham, UK, staying in the house next door to our Venetian ruin renovation project.  They were superbly helpful - freezing drinking water overnight and delivering it to our cool box each day before they left for their excursions.  The heat that year was gruesome - over 40C every day. We had no real kitchen and nowhere to store fresh food. The ice was a real boon. Each day 'Charles and Diana' would check on us when they returned....

'Don't look' whispered PJ suddenly, eyes clearly pointing to where he wanted me to! I turned slowly. At our gateless gateway stood our saviours, back from their day in the sun. Asking after our needs before they prepped for the evening...  It was so funny - but laughter would have been rude.  Diana was sporting a magnificently large pair of designer sunglasses. With the one lens missing!! One lens absolutely black in the bright sunlight, one bight blue eye peering earnestly at our disheveled selves!

As I attempted to get my mind around that - I mean, what would the world look like via a one lensed pair of sunglasses?  It must look different! You would notice!! My imagination ran riot - was she seeing me on her right, in full unblemished colour and PJ on her left in the dark?  Were we both just a lighter shade of brown than normal, or was she just aiming at the sound?!! like a bat! Surely she knew...

Apparently not! '
Diana' I said, holding back my mirth to a slight smile, 'I think that you've lost a lens'....  The response had to be seen. Diana stood for a moment looking perplexed. She had enquired of our any needs and had been accused, maybe, of losing her lens!  'From your sunglasses' I added hurriedly, 'there's a lens missing'...  Enlightenment obviously arrived an instant later, followed by Diana quickly removing the offending glasses, looking at them in total surprise, and then saying 'Oh, OH..! Charles, I've lost my lens'... She seemed in total shock!!

Charles smiled bleakly, knowing, I think, that he would get the blame for allowing Diana to sport one lensed designer sunglasses, whilst not suffering from any physical disorder to account for it, bless her. We all know the feelings - Diana felt very embarrassed and Charles felt that it wasn't his fault. Luckily our by now uncontrollable laughter proved infectious, and everyone ended up almost literally rolling.....

Another 'Happening' was David and his family - wife and son - the latter who simply was not worried at all by our insect life. During their short stays in the next house the son would often appear holding his latest acquisition. One I recall vividly was a live stag beetle, pincers awhirl (or so it seemed) - which didn't bother him at all..  When I asked if was worried about woodlice (which I hate) he said, 'no, no problem, I collect those and keep them in match boxes in my bedroom at home!'....

David's wife Sophia - Geordie born and bred, was seeking her Greek ancestors. Originally from North Western Crete she thought. She was searching for her roots. Something that almost everyone can empathize with. The remote wildness of the mountain villages and the (at that time) original sparseness of life in the area had obvious appeal to her. She was not alone, our reasons for being here were the very similar.  We were digging roots out of the ground whilst Sophia clearly wanted to find hers in a remote mountain village. She was a lovely person, but apparently lost her enthusiasm when she found that her roots were probably not in the North Western wilderness, but in the rather more cosmopolitan City of Iraklion. Cars not donkey's. Sympathy seemed more in order than empathy!

David himself was another story, which for a while we did not hear. He was great, very sociable and enjoyed an odd Amstel beer or two with us here on (building) site. Good company. Like the others who stopped briefly in the next house he kept us supplied with ice, for which we are still grateful. But he had a secret... He too, unbeknown to us, was involved in a search for his roots! But he was clearly a 'Geordie', not a Greek.... He was much younger than me anyway...

It was the day I found PJ doubled with laughter that I panicked.  'What's funny' I asked... 'You' he gasped,...'David'.... tears were trickling down his cheeks as he blurted out the rest - 'He thinks that you might be his father - been looking for him for years'.....

'But his surname's Smith', I replied, grinning myself now.  'Yes' spluttered PJ, dissolving again into serious laughter. Then he took a big breath and gasped, 'but apparently he was adopted'  .... 'his real name was B'.... 'same'.. 'as'... 'yours' ...!! Like all other panicked (innocent) people, I started counting dates...

But Greece also has other problems...
With the annual growth in tourist arrivals from it's main sources down by around 6%. Probably the result of the world economic slowdown.
The same phenomenon is creating financial pressures, which may lead to people in Greece losing their homes because loans cannot be repaid.                                      Link to Story.

And Finally....
'My sister can't say she's a lesbian' - said Dimitri Lambrou - speaking of the usurping of his homeland island's name 'by certain ladies who have no connection whatever with Lesvos'. one result is a court action three islanders who want to ban certain Greek lesbian/homosexual groups using the word "Lesbian" in their titles...

This is probably the result of the action of the (ancient) Greek poet Sappho praising love between women...

Lambrou says that Sappho was not 'gay'. Which raises the question of how (Even if she was) 250,000 people of Lesbian descent can be considered homosexual.. Got that? Answers on a postcard from Lesvos please!!

A Little Extra News....
Well, Easter is over once again. Here in Crete, as in the rest of Greece, Judas has done his worst; Jesus has died; and Jesus has arisen from the dead; the Holy flame has been flown from Jerusalem to Athens, and from there further transported by plane, ship, boat, road and track to every Greek Orthodox Church everywhere in Greece. Most probably the rest of the Greek Orthodox world received the flame too. For each individual able to light their own candle from the flame at the end of the final Easter Service, carry it home successfully and mark the sign of the cross with it over the doorway of their home - a full year of good luck...

The beautiful services, individual and state processions were televised by every Greek TV stations and must have reached the much of the world. The final message was clear "O Christos Anesti" - Christ has risen.  The Easter story has been retold, we can all now celebrate... There is no doubting the poignancy of the story, the betrayal; the crucifixion; Jesus seeking our forgiveness; the sorrow on his death; The destruction of his betrayer; the triumph of his resurrection! The celebrations which follow... Every year...

Every year Athens bears witness to a major exodus as what appears to be every Athenian in the City becomes car-borne. All heading for their roots in other parts of the mainland and Peloponnese, out to the islands.  Back to their original cities, towns and villages, original homes, in many cases to their still existing families. Their roots. A pilgrimage.

Every year some do not make it home - either to their roots or back home; numbers die or are seriously injured in the exodus. In the attempt to reach family and roots. Read.

Every year a number are seriously injured in the ensuing celebrations, the feastings, family, friends, music, dancing, gunfire and fireworks. Particularly in the remoter areas. Certainly a well known part of Cretan life. The authorities in the shape of the police attempt to mitigate the 'Easter Effect' but it seems quite impossible to stop, any more so than the deaths associated with the other well known pilgrimage - that of Muslims to Mecca.

Every year the price is paid in human loss and suffering. But having said that, what of the alternative?

What if there were no Easter? What if became merely a calendar date? What if there were no families to return to? What if 'families' - more than 2 people - no longer existed as such? What if travel were to become so expensive that it could not be afforded?  And what if, even if travel could be afforded, people had no roots to return to? Their original homes becoming multi-story car parks, their few original friends scattered to unknown parts.  The only accommodation on arrival being a hotel or guest house?  What if their original churches had become defunct; been demolished; been turned to other uses - homes, shops or supermarkets, their burial places 'deconsecrated' and their ancestral remains 'relocated?'...

Rootless. Shackled to their source of income and deeply in debt. Only  the god of revolving credit to worship. Only the ability to pray for the means to meet debt having any meaning. Religion being dead and the only doctrine left being politics. 'Marriage' meaning 'civil contract'. Freedom a non-existent concept  - unless it is the freedom to roam a godless society, either seeking something that is not there or taking from others whatever is possible. Moral and spiritual emptiness.  A void - full of talking heads.....

Well, do you know somewhere like that?  If so take heart, here on Crete we don't. Roots, families and religion still exist. A somewhat belated 'Kalo Paska!'

Site News:
We are now into our fourth month of a major upgrading of the entire site. Whilst several areas have already been updated there is still some way to go. Our new bird watching page has been unavoidably delayed and changes in Cretan life itself have left some pages outdated. Our book reviews are a bit back-logged but will be added to again quite soon. Updates continue, and we do, of course, have some outstanding content already here, not least this page, which is where things usually appear first!

Photo Galleries...
Calendar Photo Galleries:
A new one every year! 2008 Calendar gallery is complete and online now.. The 2008 calendar topic finally became 'Wild Flowers of Crete' and the result superb!  Sorry, there are no calendars left..... But we are reprinting the issue with next year's dates! Link.

Wildlife Gallery -
the first two pages - the first 48 unique photographs, including some rare specimens of the Cretan fauna. Some of is quite beautiful, some a bit scary/creepy, but all now add to our wildlife page and the ornithology gallery pages. Not all sun, sea and sand maybe, but everything depicted really is here. Always worth checking where you walk or sit! Start here.

Chania Photo Gallery.
Our long planned Chania photograph galleries commence with a presentation from Klaus Dieter Thill, whose photographs of some old buildings in the area of the Venetian Harbour show a little of what we all sometimes miss. Have a look. Start here.

Klaus will be adding a little text in the near future, but the gallery itself has been uploaded for appraisal. Do have a look, especially if you are familiar with Chania - you might just see that which you so far have not!

Miniature Chapels of Crete Gallery.
Klaus-Dieter Thill - author of  Minaturkapellen auf Krista, a printed photo album detailing some of those enigmatic roadside shrines of Crete, has now contributed the first page of his Chania on-line gallery.  Klaus has supplied photographs for this gallery which is about to go on-line here at Cretanvista. Our review of the printed book - which we have already - is still planned. Klaus is still not keen on that, as the book is not publicly available, but we hope still to persuade him!

Cretan Art and crafts - Weaving pages...
The first full project - start to finish!  A beautiful traditional loom producing beautiful products. And much more to follow. Weaving is in full swing and natural dyes are being made up and the photographs taken to add to this section. We will be adding our
pages on our new looms, equipment and new projects started as soon as we can.

Wild Flower Gallery - Still at 216 different wild flowers - but almost ready at 240 - and... We are now adding much reference information on redesigned pages - online in the next few weeks.
99% of the photographs have been taken right here at the base of the Rodopos peninsula. We are now adding the promised revisions - including more detailed references on each page and more photos of each specimen to follow. We will be publishing our book - but all the information will remain on line.

Bird Galleries
:  Gallery Page 5 still developing...
The first pages of our bird photograph gallery went on line in March 2006. We are now working hard on adding page 5 - another 12 bird photographs - which will bring the number up to 60 so far. A short delay in the supply chain, but we can now proceed.

We still, of course, have our very first nature gallery...
Contributed by Anastasios Sakoulis, whose book on Cretan wildlife Moments of Cretan Nature is also on our site as a book review.  Anastasios contributed 18 pictures of birds for addition to a gallery some time ago now. We will attach these to our bird-watching pages as soon as possible.

Another Gallery Still in the offing...
The Naturally...Crete a second gallery by Anastasios, is still in the works - still long overdue and causing a couple of headaches because of colour match problems but it is progressing and will be worth the effort. If you can't wait. the book of the same name is readily available from bookstores.

GENERAL: There are now 17 galleries featuring aspects of Cretan life, including sunrise and sunset pictures; Souda Bay War Cemetery; the gallery of magnificent wild-life pictures by Anastasios Sakoulis; our own new wildlife gallery; the wild flowers; Chania; Mhlia (Milia) traditional village; etc.. etc... etc.... And we have not even nearly started further new galleries for which the photography is now complete, including a WWII Museum Gallery - watch this space!!

Creating our galleries entails a vast amount of work and is expensive on expertise, time, effort and not least money. Projects must be chosen; locations reached; photographs taken; pages developed... A great deal of printing is also involved. Why? Well... if (for example) you have never been horizontal with a camera taking wild life pictures - it's a bit difficult to explain, but...

...27000 plus (and rising) monthly unique visitor figures to Cretanvista websites were achieved last year. Reward in itself.
Taking nothing for granted, we are all hard at work - working on updates
and getting out and about - obtaining the new information and photographs we need to keep Cretanvista well to the forefront of websites about Crete. We treasure our visitors...Really!

E-Mail Requests..
We receive some brilliant e-mails - really - and they are very welcome.  But sometimes there is no acknowledgement that our answer has been received.  We don't mind, but worry occasionally that someone may not have received an answer from us and think the worse of us!  We will ALWAYS reply to e-mail so please, if you have mailed us and not received an answer - resend your mail - we didn't get it or have somehow overlooked it.
Our response time is usually within 48 hours.

Questions and Answers..
Quite a lot of questions are received here at  Cretanvista and, as with e-mails and other forms of communication, we do our best to supply valid answers.  We never respond "Off the Top of our Heads" but always research the answer - even if we already have one (things change) before passing the information on.  We provide links to appropriate alternative sources where we have them.  The answers are given with the proviso that recipients are responsible for any action taken by them.

Guest Book.  CLOSED. E-mail links are accepted.  Website URL, Bulletin board and chat-room style links are not.  Website links are removed automatically to prevent inclusion of sites without agreement.

The Cretan Vista Calendar Photos - Birds.
We are trying to build a specialist calendar of birds - whilst we are building our own library photographs - contributions are always welcome. They will always be acknowledged and copyright will remain your own.
(Please email us before sending pictures).

Bird Watchers Extra Note - Paul Smith "Birdwatching".

We have been working extremely hard attempting to fill the huge gap left by Paul Smith's death last year. There is now reason to believe that we have succeeded in our quest.

Paul was a highly competent and often uncompromising diarist - even attempting to find another expert to fill his spot was, to say the least, a little daunting.

We now believe that, without revealing at this stage precisely who will, more than likely, be taking up the reins - it looks certain to be an acknowledged expert, but there is a short delay.

Can this be you..... or yours... or mine?..
This Month - Wilf B.
Every so often when I am out and about taking photographs I come across someone who could be you - or something which could be yours (or theirs!!).  Maybe passing in the opposite direction on a full tandem bicycle (yes, that happened); an unattended car with foreign plates; something which catches my eye and leaves me not knowing......... Either there was no one to ask or they were moving too quickly!  I thought that perhaps site visitors might like to see or be able to help identify one or two 'unknowns' which have left me wondering who, or what I have missed.   Can this be you?
