A few days appalling weather at the start - becoming rapidly spring into summer. No argument.  Not quite made it yet but our visiting friend from the UK was decidedly happy to be here, not there. Latest Crete Weather Link.

Village Life... "You've done it wrong!!'...
Our (Cretan) dog 'Indy' sounded as if she was going berserk.. Somewhere out front.  I was in the bathroom, at the back.  This is not a good plan... I moved rapidly towards the noise and when I judged myself close enough I shouted 'Stop that noise, if I kill you, you will be dead!' I should have waited..

It was our neighbour Adriani.  Fluent in Greek - not really surprising since she is Cretan, born and bred! Talking to my wife... Luckily no English spoken, so my message remained secure...

As soon as my head rounded the door Adriani included me in the noise - 'You've done it wrong' she said 'Poli Kako - ochi staphylia!' (It was very bad and I would now have no grapes). ' O Yiorgos' (George) she concluded ominously, as if that was the only answer!  Well, no need for Yiorgos I thought. My sin was, apparently, that I had pruned my grapes in a way which would see me grape-less; wine-less; everything-less and definitely without tsikouthia! Forever! Judging by the racket.  The answer was easy - blame someone else and then finish the job...

'Nikos told me to do it'  I said, 'Deka Tessera'..(on the 14th)... There will be no problems and I will have many grapes - how many shall I give to you - 100 kilos maybe?
Adriani gave up in the face of obvious lunacy and left with a Parthian shot - 'O Yiorgos!'

However, our grapes could not remain unpruned if we wanted a return, so out came the ladder again.  I say 'again' because I had started the pruning yesterday.  Adriani had only discovered the sin of a partially completed job - not lopping lunacy!

However, almost before I could put my best foot forward, so to speak, 'O Yiorgos' himself appeared with an even bigger ladder, a big grin and a clear 'hands off - Adriani has spoken' look on his face.  There was just no way around this - Cretans take a very direct line once they have a target. Yiorgo clearly had to report either myself or the grape duly pruned.  I chose wisely....

Yiorgo climbed, clambered and balanced as only Cretan men can - well, only Cretan men and mountain goats - the goats teaching the men, who goatherd them from a very early age.  I watched dumfounded as Yiorgo disobeyed every health and safety rule ever created, using his ancient Greek wooden ladder (wide at the base, narrow at the top) as a mere excuse for his airborne acrobatics.

Airborne is where I expected him to be shortly before he sued me for the price of my house - immediately after his 5 metre flight to terra firma.  Not as far as the Wright brothers maybe, but then they were using an aeroplane, not an ancient Greek ladder.. Sue that is, if he didn't first impale himself on his razor-sharp secateurs on impact and become dead.  In which case it would be his wife who sued!

Either way, our incompletely pruned grapes would become their incompletely pruned grapes, either both, or one or the other of them - along with the house to which they are attached.  The court might let me keep the tent, I thought.

Yiorgo's finale was astounding.  Wearing Greek wellies he swung himself around the ladder like a pole dancer, landed lightly on a six inch wide ledge on top of our boundary wall, 9 feet above the concrete lane outside, and did a sort of Swan Lake pirouette to reach the furthest stems he wanted to prune.  And 'snipped' them before pirouetting back!  All in time it took for me to re-start my heart before being dead set in....

'Teliosi' he declared, hopping down, 'to kalo tora'...  And of course, all is well that ends well.  And from where I sat all had ended well.

I did no work, pruned my grapes and had coffee without lifting a finger! 'O Yiorgos'... I didn't do it wrong at all now, did I?!

Except that, a couple of hours later, just as the rain started, another 'Yiorgos' arrived in the lane with two tonnes of logs for our 'Yiorgos'.. If he didn't get immediate help his logs would be very wet...  'No contest', I thought as I donned my parka - 'beware of Greeks bearing gifts - or be prepared to get wet.  Very wet!'

A Little Extra News....

New book review; new bird gallery; new additions to the flower galleries; new Athanasios Sakoulis nature gallery in preparation; new diary from Paul Smith imminent - to say nothing of an upgraded diary page; Carol Palioudakis CD's off to the competition winners; a new recipe prepared (and the results eaten); a little cash to children in hospital & special schools.....

My, we have all been very, very busy. Some superbly sunny days since the beginning of the month saw us out searching for our local wild flowers.

March 5th (Clean Monday) saw us finding them. Life here on Crete has it's rewards..  And what rewards!  A short drive to Kastelli via Rodopou turned into a major detour - having to double back to Astratigos, Afrata, Kolimbari, Kastelli, Marethiana and back via Kamara to Astratigos - turned an initial 20km (planned) idea into a 45Km (unplanned) nature excursion. But wasn't it just all  worth the effort.  So much sunshine, so much colour....

Starting with the magnificent view from above Astratigos of the snow covered western-most face of the snow-capped White (Omalos) Mountains, bathed in sunlight set against a clear blue sky. Greening slopes below dotted with tiny white abodes and the occasional chapel perched on top of a high hill.  The northern end of the mountain range seeming to trail down into the still deep blue (cold) Mediterranean. Magical...

But then weren't we in a car?  We were and the drive (apart from a brief sprint along the national road - itself mostly lined with blossoming bushes) was along twisting mountain roads mostly lined with spring wild flowers in a density  one can only wonder at.

Carpets of brilliant white daisy lead the way down to Kolimbari from Afrata towards the sea, where the edges of the beach are quickly turning  purple as the Mathiola plants flower.  Flat fields in the area are awash with yellow Oxalis - mostly single flowered but many huge blocks of massed doubles.

The national road towards Kastelli, itself picturesque at this time of the year, is starting to turn bright yellow in many places as the roadside hedges of gorse and mimosa open at the beginning of their superb displays.

Ascending the twisting road towards Sirikaki mustards and Oxalis line the way, the pattern broken occasionally by absolutely stunning displays by almond trees in full flower.  Fronting olive groves where anemones of all varieties and colours - brilliantly rich reds, shades of blue varying from light to almost purple - and of a yellow that almost defeats one's camera in the sunshine. All vie with the green of short thin grasses for their place in the sun....

Back to Astratigos along the old national road twisting upwards and downwards through villages towards Kamara and Rodopou the predominant colours are the greens of the olive groves lined and often carpeted by bright yellow mustards and oxalis, also lining the narrow strip of weathered tarmac as it meanders back towards the sea at the bay of Chania and those gorgeous white mountains set against that sunlit light blue sky....

What more can one say - well, maybe the reason for the trip itself - it wasn't to do with gluttony; sunning oneself after a hard winter; or communing with nature - it was all about returning a pair of spectacles left accidentally at our house by a friend the previous day.

Without his spectacles he might have missed all this - and without his spectacles so might we - this trip turned out to be the start of our spring outings and a veritable treasure chest of flower finds. A brilliant year's start..

Books & Good Reading - Latest Reviews.
Our latest book has been on line for a couple of weeks now, 'Crete:The battle and the resistance' by Antony Beevor.  Ann Lisney has already followed up with 'The Cretan Runner' by George Psychoundakis which will be on-line shortly.

Meanwhile, our latest review:-

Crete: The battle and the resistance.
Antony Beevor. John Murray (Publishers) Ltd.

 - is very well worth a look, or perhaps even a buy if the review appeals.  Not from us, but details of suppliers are on each review.

The people behind the books:  Every book review has an introductory paragraph about the author/s. We have decided to go a little further and where possible, include profiles of not only these talented authors but also, where we can, of people behind them.

Good examples are  'Patouchas' - Ioannis Kondylakis  (Read the review) and 'Who Pays The Ferryman' - Michael J. Bird (Read the  review)  These profiles will be attached to relevant book reviews.  Watch this space...

Photo Galleries  NEW MARCH 2006 additions..
Wild Flowers: Up from 168 to 192 different wild flowers.
99% have been taken right here at the base of the Rodopos peninsula. We are continually working on these galleries and will soon been adding further pages, including detailed reference pages and more photos of each specimen. There are now more than 4,000+ flower photographs in our databases. The galleries will rise to 216 specimens shortly - an additional 24 already in the workshop! Detailed descriptions will follow soon.

Bird Galleries.
  NEW Gallery...
The first page of our first purely bird photograph gallery went on line on 26th March 2006.  Well done Colin Turvey (see February News) - we are now working hard on adding more of Colin's bird photographs - a big plus for Cretanvista.

And More -
Athanasios Sakoulis, who contributed the magnificent gallery from his book on Cretan wildlife to our site Moments of Cretan Nature has now contributed 18 pictures of birds for addition to a gallery. We will attach this to Paul Smith's bird-watching page in the near future.  Something worth waiting for... Just a little longer.

But that isn't all...
Anastasios has also given us permission (and supplied the photographs) to produce a gallery of his latest book, a book of 20 superb postcards of Cretan wildlife called Naturally... Crete. Ann Lisney will also be reviewing the book in the near future.  What can I say - another first en-route, watch this space!...

Special Gallery.
A first! Klaus-Dieter Thill - author of  Minaturkapellen auf Krista, a real photo albumn detailing some of those enigmatic roadside shrines of Crete. Klaus has supplied photographs for this gallery which is now on-line here at Cretanvista. There will also be, of course, a review the book...

Insects..
We have built up an extensive collection of  photographs from which we are producing galleries for our wild life page.  The next of these will be insects - about which we have received few queries, but many of which are supremely photogenic.  We have some beautiful reptiles too...

GENERAL: There are now 13 galleries featuring aspects of Cretan life, including sunrise and sunset pictures; Souda Bay War Cemetery; and the gallery of magnificent wild-life pictures by Anastasios Sakoulis, author of  "Stigmotipa Tis Kritikis Freesis" (Moments of Cretan Nature); our infant gallery about house renovation; and of course our annual calendar galleries containing 60 or so pictures of north western Crete about to increase by 12 - for 2005. The 2006 calendar gallery is en-route.

E-Mail Requests..
I receive some brilliant e-mails - really - and they are very welcome.  But sometimes there is no acknowledgement that our answer has been received.  We don't mind, but worry occasionally that someone may not have received an answer from us and think the worse of us!  We will ALWAYS reply to e-mail so please, if you have mailed us and not received an answer - resend your mail - we didn't get it or have somehow overlooked it.
Our response time is usually within 48 hours.

Personal Information..
We have been asked in the past to help locate people. We would love to be able to assist but regret that are unable to do this.  There is fuller comment in previous issues of CV News.

Questions and Answers..
Quite a lot of questions are received here at  Cretanvista and, as with e-mails and other forms of communication, we do our best to supply valid answers.  We never respond "Off the Top of our Heads" but always research the answer - even if we already have one (things change) before passing the information on.  We provide links to appropriate alternative sources where we have them.  The answers are given with the proviso that recipients are responsible for any action taken by them.

Guest Book.  E-mail links are accepted.  Website URL, Bulletin board and chat-room style links are not.  Website links are removed automatically to prevent inclusion of sites without agreement.

Book Reviews.
Because each book review is original - we steal nothing from the book covers or the reviews of others - it takes a little longer to deal with each.  No point our reviewing the reviews when what readers really want to know about is the content!

The Cretan Vista Calendar Photos - Birds.
We trying to build a specialist calendar of birds - whilst we are building our own library photographs - contributions are always welcome. They will always be acknowledged and copyright will remain your own.
(Please email us before sending pictures).

Bird Watchers.
Paul Smith, our resident specialist on ornithology, last year underwent unexpected surgery for what was a fatal cancer.  We understand that his remarkable subsequent recovery is almost complete. MARCH DIARY on line at all Cretanvista URL's.

We remain deeply indebted to Han and Inger van der Lelie, 3815 PV Amersfoort, who enabled us to publish the June 2005 page of Paul's now unbroken series.

Can this be you.....or yours?
Every so often when I am out and about taking photographs I come across someone who could be you - or something which could be yours (or theirs!!).  Maybe passing in the opposite direction on a full tandem bicycle (yes, that happened); an unattended car with foreign plates; something which catches my eye and leaves me not knowing......... Either there was no one to ask or they were moving too quickly!  I thought that perhaps site visitors might like to see or be able to help identify one or two 'unknowns' which have left me wondering who, or what I have missed.   Can this be you?
