MARCH WEATHER ...
Variable but increasingly sunny in the day with a definite 'spring is here' feel about it and although the nights sometimes still demanded a log fire, they were often beautifully starlit, with the sound of scops owls and occasionally barn owls.  Summer is en-route, but it still wasn't beach weather....

Russ Collins (Lt) & Eric Rowe

CretanVista Visitors From France

Above: We could not include this superb shot (!) of Eric & Russ last time, but anyone can see that with friends like these we are certainly not worried about enemies!!  Although both now live in the south of France, Eric originates from Suffolk, UK,  whilst Russ is from America.

Both are interested in and specialise in aspects of nature - flowers, birds - and Eric is our own site (cretanvista) advisor on flower identification.  They had a reasonable ten days, staying gratis at the holiday home of Klause and Gudrun Harms in Afrata, (Gudrun is translating the site to German) - but the real flower show started about three weeks after their visit.  The flowers just will not go by the clock!!

Russ is also webmaster of www.provencebeyond.com well worth a visit if you are interested in France, especially the southern parts.

Nature Abounds....
And seemingly doesn't know any!  Barely a month after our February blizzard the local countryside is ablaze with wild flowers.  Trees and shrubs are coming on and the birds are in increasingly active - as a look at Paul Smiths bird watching page will undoubtedly confirm. Link: PaulBird1

Holiday-makers are also making their presence felt in small numbers, passing through both in hire cars and, probably the best way if you like nature and walking, on foot.

Since most charter flights have not yet started
we presume that - because the common language we hear is German, the early visitors are from Germany flying in via Athens on scheduled flights.  For British readers who may not know this - Easyjet to Athens and a scheduled flight from Athens with either Olympic or Aegean Airways can sometimes work out very much cheaper than a scheduled flight all the way with either Aegean or Olympic - though you will still have to change at Athens.

For anyone living in the past, Athens Airport is not the old Hellenicon (now long closed and to become a park and/or sports centre) but the magnificent and international award-winning El Venizelos.  No more rushing around the Hellenicon Airport perimeter in a taxi with your baggage - everything is on the one spot.

This is a real way to get to Crete (our way!) and means that you can break your journey at Athens for as little as a day (an overnight Easyjet from Luton UK will have you on the tarmac at Athens not long after 4am).  By the time you have de-planed, retrieved your bags and said "Kalimera" to immigration and customs, a day or more in Athens is easily feasible.  If you do this, use a taxi or the airport express bus into Syntagma, (or you hotel), NOT, unless you are a Rothschild, a 'limousine'.

Before leaving the airport book your onward flight(s) to Crete (and back) then have a happy day (or two) in Athens.  PLEASE DON'T ATTEMPT THIS DURING THE OLYMPICS!!

What to do when you get there?  Have a look at our day in Athens Take a plane.

The picture strip: Although the flowers have been blooming with a serious vengeance since the beginning of March - and the four specimens below are representative of the quality, (enlarge them - my favourite picture is the Iris), nothing can really compare with actually walking along a track between the olive groves in the sunshine.  Unfortunately we can't yet capture the sounds and smells that go with the pictures - but just for for a little while, imagine.....

ASTRATIGOS VILLAGE LIFE...
March comes around once a year, and so does my best Cretan friend, neighbour and mentor, Mixaelis Papadakis.  Well, he comes around more than once a year, but usually only once bearing his step ladder and secateurs...  He is here to cut down - sorry, I mean 'prune' our grapes.  Especially the one over the front patio....

To the average Englishman here "prune" in Greek means "cut down" which is traumatic - after watching about 80% of last seasons splendid vine growth fall to the ground, leaving mainly the wood belonging to the Krevatina that supports the remains!  Since the Krevatina is PAR Scandinavian pine - well dosed with Cuprinol and finished in Clusil varnish it is unlikely to produce many grapes.

Mixaelis, a sprite 70plus years - giving me a good ten - climbed about like an acrobat - dismembering branches like a 20 year old, until he accidentally secateured the fleshy tip of a finger. Bright red blood gushed forth at a rate worthy of a newly opened champagne bottle..  He followed up this unchoreographed part of this year's act by smiling wanly, breaking open a packet of 20 Karelia lights (Greek cigarettes) - splitting one open and stuffing the cut full of tobacco!!  Around which he wrapped a tissue for a couple of minutes till the bleeding stopped...

Being an expert refugee from the English NHS in saving lives cuts absolutely no ice, vines or fingers in Astratigos.  My ability to cut his finger off cleanly and apply a sterile dressing - free of all charges counts for nothing here!

Being still behind with the news, I can report that four weeks or so later there are 40+ bunches of grapes developing - maybe a little Chateau Burgess at last...

The prunings - just in case this fact has escaped you - can be made into gunpowder by turning them into charcoal - but you will need rather a lot of prunings if you want to challenge Guy Fawkes.  And you will need a pass to parliament if you are not an MP or Black Rod!

Meanwhile, if you think that Greek wines are rubbish you really are drinking the wrong bottles - every country makes cheap plonk - Greece produces some of the finest wines in the world.

My daughters wedding feast featured clean Cretan whites and reds, Champaign from Rhodes - and the most magnificent Boutari red 'Grand Reserve Naoussa' (87) - all of which met with the very obvious approval of the mostly English and Welsh guests at the York Novotel.  Yes, we carried Greek wines to England!! None came back! Try this Link.... Greek Wine.

Earthquakes.... Wobbling Still.....

Earthquake activity in Greece continues as usual. There were three quakes of note reported:-

04 March: 3.7 Richter Scale prefecture of Serres with an epicenter reported approximately  92Km northeast of Thessaloniki.  Link to story.

17 March: 6.3 R (undersea) 7.21am - 40Km south of Crete, strong quake in the sea.  Link to story.

17 March: 3.5 R  2.32pm - 20Km northwest of Athens.

18 March: 4.4 R two tremors 3am and 4am - Edessa.
                4.7 R 5pm - Dodecanese Island of Astypalaia.
                                                 Link to story.

None of these earthquakes caused damage or injuries and in the case of the Serres 'quake one seismologist has pointed out that  the last major earthquake in that area was in 52BC.  Earthquakes are a common feature of life  in Greece and rarely cause any damage. The problem is that the ones that do are unpredictable. However, at least one professor believes that there will be at least 4 major quakes in the future.  Story Link.

Snippets...
Phony Cops, Phony Uniforms....
"
All that glitters", said one of my primary school  teachers "....is definitely not gold."  Fake police in Athens have taken to including uniforms in their act, checking tourist wallets for 'Fake cash' and running off with any they 'Find'....  Possibly the same one's who are stopping and hijacking cigarette lorries on a main highway.  But then, you would'nt show your wallet to a police officer would you?  Link to story.

Another bite, Another "Bar"..
"Sweet Tooth Lands in Court" would have been my headline - or perhaps "Lawyer finds Sweet Tooth" - but it definitely could not have encourage brand loyalty from Iraklion lawyer K. Tzevabinas..  Especially when the tooth was found to be "...from a mammal, possibly a human and most likely an elderly one."..  Perhaps a case of "Tooth Bites Back".....  Link to story.

In the News...

The General Election.
March 7th brought the widely predicted election result - ND (New Democracy) beating the previously ruling PASOK by 45.36% (3,360,424 votes) to 40.548% (3,003,988 votes) - 165 to 117 seats.  The new parliament was (300 MP's) sworn in during the opening ceremony on 18th March.   Link to Results.

Olympic Flame.
The Olympic flame - symbol of the games since they were first held in 776 B.C. was lit on March 25th in the grove of ancient Olympia in a spell-binding ceremony in which high priestess Thalia Prokopiou intoned, "Apollo, sun god and god of the idea of light, send us your rays of light to light the torch for Athens".  As she held the torch to the curved mirror designed to catch the rays of the sun it burst instantly into the flame which will hopefully unite the world into peace for at least the 2004 Olympic games.  At the birthplace of the games...

By August 13th the flame will be at the opening ceremony at the Olympic stadium in Athens, having travelled 78,000Km through five continents and 27 countries and 34 cities (a record) in 43 days....  It will have been carried by 11,000 torch bearers, commencing with the Greek javelin champion Costas Gatzioudis and ending with IOC president Jacques Rogge.  'Greece Now' reportd Mr Rogge as saying (each torch bearer having to run 400 metres) "I hope at my age I will be able to run 400 metres.  It will be a great achievement."

I wonder what will happen if he doesn't make it?...... Will the flame set fire to his hospital bed?  Or perhaps the ambulance on his way there?!!

However, one cannot doubt that the games are now in secure, National Democratic, and humble hands.  Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis, shortly after gaining power, exhorted his MP's to be always humble'  "Humility" he said "...is a way of life and everyday behaviour....."

Taking personal charge of the much vilified Olympic games development progress he said:-

"I'll take the decisions.  I'll take the resonsibility.  I'll take the blame.  I'll take the credit."

Humble indeed.....  Mind, with the constant barracking from some foreign journalists and organisations such as the BBC he really will deserve some credit for an outstanding return home of the Olympic spirit....

Airliner in Bomb Alert..
An Olympic flight from Athens to Johannesburg was forced to turn back whilst over Crete on 21st March in what turned out to be a hoax call to a TV station....
Link to story.

Well, that's about it for now.....
Very late again...!  I still have not caught up with publishing the newspage since my illness, but am nearly there.  I believe it better to have complete files and archives rather than have pieces missing, as that is not helpful when people want to look back.

Sorry the book reviews remain unmoved - our new reviewer, David Smith, was unable to take up the bat for us when his wife became ill.  We wish both Val and David everything we would want for ourselves, and of course sincerely hope that David will be able to return a bit later.

E-Mail Requests..
I receive some brilliant e-mails - really - and they are very welcome.  But sometimes there is no acknowledgement that our answer has been received.  We don't mind, but worry occasionally that someone may not have received an answer from us and think the worse of us!  We will ALWAYS reply to e-mail so please, if you have mailed us and not received an answer - resend your mail - we didn't get it or have somehow overlooked it.
Our response time is usually within 48 hours.

Personal Information..
We have been asked in the past to help locate people. We would love to be able to assist but regret that are unable to do this.  There is fuller comment in previous issues of CV News.

Questions and Answers..
Quite a lot of questions are received here at Cretanvista and, as with e-mails and other forms of communication, we do our best to supply valid answers.  We never respond "Off the Top of our Heads" but always research the answer - even if we already have one (things change) before passing the information on.  We provide links to appropriate alternative sources where we have them.  The answers are given with the proviso that recipients are responsible for any action taken by them.

Guest Book.  E-mail links are accepted.  Bulletin board and chat-room style links are not.  Website links are removed automatically to prevent inclusion of sites without agreement.

Book Reviews.
Because each book review is original - we steal nothing from the book covers or the reviews of others - it takes a little longer to deal with each.  No point our reviewing the reviews when what readers really want to know about is the content! 'Books and good reading'.

Bird Watchers.
Paul Smiths' bird watching diary page remains very popular and hopefully Paul is well into his February 2004 diary.  We are sincerely indebted to visitors who have supplied photographs.  Currently we are displaying these in CVNews, (no room again this month). Hopefully we will receive enough to start a gallery of Cretan sightings.

Book Reviews - 2 current - *new book received...
The last recent review -  'Moments of Cretan Nature' by Anastasios Sakoulis, (ISBN: 960-91979-0-6) "Stigmotipa Tis Kritikis Freesis" in Greek -  is a super book with some magnificent photographs.  Our review is accompanied by a small photo gallery - our first review to do so.  Our site pictures (from the book) are, we think, nice!  The printed pictures in the book are in almost all cases very much bigger, nicer!

Books and Good Reading - Moments in Cretan Nature

Reviews in Preparation...
'
Eleni' by Nicolas Gage.  Published by Harvill - (ISBN 1 86046 346 0) first published 1983.  Reprinted.

This is his true story of a son seeking to avenge his mothers murder by ELAS Guerillas during the Greek civil war.  Real.  Compelling.  Harrowing in the extreme.  Revealing the Greek psych as nothing I have ever read.  But, unless you have no feelings, it could haunt you forever......  'Eleni' (in preparation).

Books Received..
A gift from American visitors.  'LAND OF CRETE'  360o
Panoramic Photographs. Meis Studio©  ISBN 960-86736-0-7.  Absolutely Beautiful.  Hope I can get permission to include a photograph.  Thank you Jim & Karen.

Can this be you.....or yours?
Every so often when I am out and about taking photographs I come across someone who could be you - or something which could be yours (or theirs!!).  Maybe passing in the opposite direction on a full tandem bicycle (yes, that happened); an unattended car with foreign plates; something which catches my eye and leaves me not knowing......... Either there was no one to ask or they were moving too quickly!  I thought that perhaps site visitors might like to see or be able to help identify one or two 'unknowns' which have left me wondering who, or what I have missed.   Can this be yours?
