FEBRUARY WEATHER.....  Remained very changeable over short periods of time. Temperatures on a see-saw. There were some violent storms and squalls near the coast. Both air and sea traffic were halted occasionally...

Enough is usually enough, but not always...

So there it was, an empty shell with the washing outside, just waiting for the final run of bricks before the roof went on. First there were enough bricks, then disaster, a change of plan, and  there were not nearly enough, and no time to get more!....

Astratigos Village Life.... Getting some.. XII
(Continued from January - Previous click here).

At the end the last episode...
....
Our agent arrived with the bad news - the roofer, who was starting Monday, wanted another 40cm height on the last run of bricks. I needed a supply of extra bricks. Couldn't be done, said our beloved agent, 'it's Friday noon, I can't get any delivered by tomorrow'.............

My despair became anger, It seemed that he was really talking yet more money, and I was determined that he would not manage to get any.....

Where, in the name of all that is holy, was I to get the required height if there were not enough bricks? It seemed an impossibility, but like a dog with a good bone - or perhaps a bear with a sore head - I could not shake the feeling that there was a solution right here on our building site. I stared at the bricks, I stared at the space they had to fill, I thought over every conversation surrounding the problem. I had a short nap, I went back to the vicious circle - bricks, space, conversations. Bricks, space, conversations. Round and round and round....

And there, quite suddenly, it was! The answer - right under my nose. Like a Chinese puzzle, so obviously before my eyes that I had not been able to see it. The answer was in a conversation with our agent. In my last frustrated remarks to his suggestion that I should top the bricks with a totally unacceptable thick layer of mortar! No way.

But thinking that what seemed could have only have been a mocking answer to my frustrated, angry question, 'What am I supposed to do now'? He had unwittingly provided the key. There it was looking back at me from the pile of bricks! The bricks were in fact blocks. Thermal blocks. Each was a honeycomb of cells. And there was the answer... Cut horizontally three cells deep I had two bricks for each - three cells deep would leave the correct mortar gap between the two bricks and the total would be the 40cm required!

Now why didn't I think of that? I was elated! Go for it! Go for it now, not much time left, and I wasn't sure that the mortar would have set sufficiently by Monday, but the temperature was in the late 30's early 40's, even keeping the setting mortar damp it would still set off sufficiently with luck. But there was still a problem -

The problem of cutting 78 blocks so that there were 156! A power cutter would have been ideal, but the disks simply were not deep enough to do the job. It had to be the brickie's method of cutting by hand with the chisel end of a brick hammer. Compounded by the fact that ours was the Greek variety - hard wooden handle with no shock protection for the user... But then, still elated at having solved the problem I got cracking, or rather 'chopping' the 78 blocks into 156. There were only two blocks spare if there were breakages!

Nor did my elation allow for the realities of the situation. The sheer physical effort of moving the blocks which alone weighed more than half a ton - each was around 11.5"x10"x6" and weighed 5.5lbs - would have daunted. Add two layers of mortar around 40yards of a wall 17 feet or so high - where all would have to be hauled by myself in the summer heat and I would have been happier just going to sleep and enjoying the nightmare. If I had thought about it I would have given up there and then. As it was I started at the beginning - chopping the bricks to size. Reality was a luxury I could enjoy later....Maybe.... It was Friday afternoon....

By Saturday evening I had done it!  That I was half dead physically didn't seem to matter - emotionally I was on a high! Every one of those bricks that I chopped had acquired a name. Every one had heard language that I would have preferred to have been incapable of (but which I had enjoyed immensely). Everyone had heard exactly the retribution I would like to have visited upon the 78 unfortunate, unknowing souls who I apparently had on my agenda. Even down to the bigger boy who had taken my tricycle from me when I was around four years old. He had rammed it repeatedly into a kerb until the frame snapped irreparably. There was no money for a new one. David S, I have news for you, all is not forgotten let alone forgiven. You can run my friend, but you can't hide!!

After all these years even I thought I had forgotten that!

I didn't calculate anything except the mortar mix ingredients from the time I chopped the first brick. Just anointed each with pure invective - undistilled malice!

Every hour I took a ten minute break - lying inside the old house, exhausted on a bed with a fan on full and iced water provided by Pam. Climbing up and down the scaffolding, hauling chopped bricks and mortar, laying the bricks and becoming progressively more cooked by the sun. My goodness but it was good fun! By The time the roofer arrived on the Monday all was ready. Done.

Our agent was helping the roofer. My thoughts as he stood on the topmost bricks were, of course, anxiety that the mortar may not have set properly....

Although earthquakes most certainly are a common feature of life in Greece. It is however, unusual for deaths, injuries and or damage to buildings to occur, which could lead to a false sense of security.

The author of a ten year study at the National Technical University of Athens says that Greece is sitting waiting for the next major earthquake without doing anything to mitigate it's effects. (Our italics).

A Little Extra (Current) News....
Although, looking at the amount of news created in the last few weeks 'A Little Extra' is probably a complete misnomer.  The Japanese earthquake, it's aftermath, and the devastating tsunami which followed the 'quake were probably seen by the entire developed world almost immediately after the event. By the 28th March the latest figures were quoting 10,489 deaths and 16, 621 people still missing, plus 2,777 injured. The reality is probably more than 27,000 dead... Probably the most shocking part of the entire event is that the following Tsunami more than likely took the many of the lives deaths occurred in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake as the tsunami swept ashore.

Estimates of the eventual death toll vary between 20,000 and 40,000 people....

The Tsunami severely damaged four Nuclear reactors which supplied electricity to almost 30% of the population of Japan, damaging the cooling systems and giving rise to genuine fears that radiation leaks were inevitable as explosions occurred at the reactors. Several countries began re-examining the safety measures at their own reactors and their plans for building new ones. That situation is currently ongoing, with one reported part-meltdown of a reactor core and radiation leak at the Japanese plants.

North Africa and the Middle East continued to make headlines as many Arab States were the scene of violent protests and demands for political change, but only in Libya have foreign forces - in the form of UN resolutions and direct intervention by Nato forces who imposed a 'No Fly Zone' on Libya and followed through with direct attacks on the forces of Colonel Gadaffi in order to protect civilians. The fact that attacks are not being made on the insurgent (rebel) forces have given rise to accusations from Russia that Nato is in fact interfering in the internal affairs of Libya.

Greek ports, particularly those of Souda Bay and Iraklion became, first the rescue base for thousands of mainly Chinese and Korean workers fleeing the violence in Libya, and then, as Greece demonstrated support for it's NATO allies, bases for aircraft and ships of the Nato coalition forces currently involved in actions  affecting Libya. American forces, mainly in the form of an aircraft carrier and supporting vessels and aircraft based at Akrotiri (Chania Airport) quickly declared their role as supporting (non-combatant) as did Greece.

There will no doubt be many further developments in the 'Libyan Crisis'.

Meanwhile and more recently mass protests occurred in London on the 28th March as thousands of public service workers marched through central London protesting against the plans of the Government to reorganize public services - which include staffing cuts and other plans which the Trade Unions do not agree with. It was perhaps inevitable that the marchers were joined by violent extremist elements who were shown on international TV making the recent riots in Athens, about which the British press made a focus for a short time, look like a Sunday School outing by a local youth club....

A senior London police officer said that a number of officers had been injured, but taking into consideration the size of the rally, that he thought the numbers acceptably small. It cannot have escaped the attention of the world that, be it caused by a small number of activists or not, there was an unacceptable level of violence and damage to property.

Locally, here on Crete, the holiday season is rapidly approaching and there have been a number of suggestions that the problems in North Africa and some Middle Eastern States will result in Greece reaping benefits in the form of increased tourism numbers.

Certainly Crete is very well placed in many respects to offer anything that the self-respecting holiday maker could wish for. The trick is simply to know what you want and make sure that it is available (as far as is possible) at the time you want to come. Flora and fauna - try early in the season, certainly before June. Sun, sea and sand - June/July/August - maybe September. Trekking, climbing, hang-gliding, diving, painting, drawing, driving, cycling et al - whenever you feel is best for you. The island is steeped in history from the beginning of recorded time, and it has something that most tourist attractions can only seek to emulate - the friendliest people and the finest (healthy) food in the world. But then, if you just want a pint and a Big-Mac, don't waste your brass, you can get them in Manchester!

Calendar Photo Galleries:
A new one every year for the past decade! The 2010 Calendar gallery is complete and online now.. The 2009 calendar topic was 'Wild Flowers of Crete' (after our wild flower galleries) and the result was superb!  Which is why we followed up the theme in 2010. And again in 2011! Because of our success we have already produced our 2012 wild flower calendar format (and our other themes continue), but of course that is not available until later in the year. But we can reprint any issue with the next year's dates - whatever year that happens to be! Have a look at the 2010 wild flowers calendar Link.

Wild Flower Gallery - Now at 360 different wild flower photographs online - plus dozens in preparation - Galleries 13 - 15 are open. 360 flowers online. Gallery 16 is developing - which will mean 384 online..  Plus we have added more reference information on redesigned pages - with more photos of each specimen to follow later. You may find an occasional duplicate, which we are keeping for the moment as the actual photographs will be different and will be used in a later planned re-organization of the galleries.

We are now well en-route to putting the first 50% of our target 1020 individual flowers on-line. But it all takes time. First find the flower (hopefully in full bloom); then get the photographs (sounds easy); put the photographs on-line (simply work); with basic information on each, making certain that it is accurate...

If you know the location of a rare flower please don't hesitate to help us photograph - we wont reveal your information to anyone else.

Please note also that All flower galleries have now been successfully re-coded to eliminate a bug which affected some Firefox browser versions. All the information will remain online at Cretanvista. With the advent of ipods, ipads, Blackberry's and other gizmos it will be much easier to take Cretanvista galleries on your field trips - and all the information that goes with them. **Your Amazon Kindle will display cretanvista perfectly.

Wildlife Gallery - the first two pages - 48 unique photographs, including some rare specimens of the Cretan fauna. Some is quite beautiful, some a bit scary/creepy, but all now add to our wildlife page and the ornithology gallery pages.  Remember that it is always worth checking where you walk or sit before you do! Start here.

Chania Photo Gallery.
Our Chania photograph galleries commenced with a presentation from Klaus Dieter Thill, whose photographs of some old buildings in the area of the Venetian Harbour show a little of what we all sometimes miss. Have a look - it's worth it. Start here.

Miniature Chapels of Crete Gallery.
Klaus-Dieter Thill - author of  Minaturkapellen auf Krista, a printed photo album detailing some of those enigmatic roadside shrines of Crete, has now contributed the first page of his Chania on-line gallery.

Cretan Art and crafts - Weaving pages...
Weaving is in full swing and natural dyes are being made up and the photographs taken to add to this section. We will be adding our
pages on our new looms, equipment and new projects started as soon as we can. The weaving tends to take the time right now..

Our very first nature gallery...
Contributed by Anastasios Sakoulis, whose book on Cretan wildlife Moments of Cretan Nature is also on our site as a book review.  Anastasios contributed 18 pictures of birds for addition to a gallery some time ago now. We will attach these to our bird-watching pages as soon as possible.

GENERAL: There are now 37 galleries featuring aspects of Cretan life, including sunrise and sunset pictures; Souda Bay War Cemetery; the gallery of magnificent wild-life pictures by Anastasios Sakoulis; our own wildlife gallery; the wild flowers; Chania; Mhlia (Milia) traditional village; etc.. etc...

Our improvements continue. We sincerely hope that you notice little - apart from increased enjoyment and ease of use. Keep visiting - your presence is what make all worthwhile.

Can this be you..... or yours... or mine?.. This Month - Wilf B.
Every so often when I am out and about taking photographs I come across someone who could be you - or something which could be yours (or theirs!!).  Maybe passing in the opposite direction on a full tandem bicycle (yes, that happened); an unattended car with foreign plates; something which catches my eye and leaves me not knowing......... Either there was no one to ask or they were moving too quickly!  I thought that perhaps site visitors might like to see or be able to help identify one or two 'unknowns' which have left me wondering who, or what I have missed.   Can this be you?

 Look very carefully... Problem?

Until next month, best wishes from here on Crete. WB.
