FEBRUARY WEATHER ...
Improved rapidly over the month. There were some very cold, very wet and a smaller number of very, very stormy days. But by the end of the month you could well be forgiven for believing that spring is here and summer just around the corner.....

Narcissus Revealed..          © Burgess@Cretanvista

In February 2004 (archive) we published a slightly larger version of the above image - and promised to publish the associated tale in 'Short Stories'.  The tale now starts below  - only 3 years late!!!

Astratigos Village Life...
For a village  without modern amenities - no shops, schools, tavernas (clubs or pubs!) or even that Cretan classic, the Kafenion, things certainly have a way of happening here....

Today was my turn - and it was not to be a very happy one, which was unusual. I almost invariably awaken in a good mood - often even laughing and telling the world my latest joke, or holding an inane conversation with my 'other' self in the name of 'entertainment'. This morning it was the blankets which triggered my grins and giggles as I welcomed a new day...

I was cocooned within my very cosy and warm blankets, remembering a very enjoyable previous evening - dinner with friends - but really had to get moving.  And that was just the problem, although I didn't realize it right then. The grins and giggles were to be short lived, even though they started well....

My 'cocoon' wouldn't open! 'Well' I thought, smiling to myself 'at least it's warm'. I strained a bit harder at the covers wrapped around me.  'Damn things' I thought - '27 years old' (my self-allotted age) 'and you can't even get the bed covers off!'  I started laughing at the incongruity of it - I could see the news headlines - "A fully grown Englishman had to be rescued this morning by police and fire services after becoming trapped in bed following a dinner party the previous evening in Astratigos, Crete....."  I laughed and laughed, waking my wife - but the cocoon wouldn't let go...

'Get me out of here' I pleaded, still laughing, 'these damn covers are attacking me!'  Pam pulled the offending covers away. Which was the moment I stopped laughing. I was still stuck... I suppressed a fleeting twinge of genuine fear - something completely alien to my nature, and began to take stock. A lifetime in the English NHS trying to help others should have taught me something. It had. The fear returned - I was only 62 and until this morning.... Well, until this morning I had had few problems in life... Had I?...

Well, not quite. A couple of weeks previously, not too long after two airline flights - UK Athens/ Athens Crete -  I had curiously developed 'a touch of sciatica' and had taken analgesics a couple of times when it had disturbed my sleep.  Last week I had walked 'just like John Wayne' one morning when I got up but it had worn off after a few days - hadn't it?... Hadn't it?....

My pennies were dropping like a Las Vegas fruit machine having multiple jackpots... Hadn't it?.. No, it hadn't - and, I thought, fear returning as I cursed my own stupidity in not recognizing (or was it perhaps denying) my own signs and symptoms, maybe now it wasn't going to... Maybe not ever, which from where I was lying, might be a very long time from the age of 62 years. I had been a complete fool. Totally incompetent. Had I taken action earlier - the dull ache in my calf, the increasing 'sciatic' pain and playing John Wayne should have surely been enough - this situation may never have occurred. Probably wouldn't have. Had been, perhaps, avoidable. Whatever, it was here now.

It was a stroke. The only question was which type... Damage to the blood supply to a part of my brain had left me with two paralyzed limbs - one arm, one leg... Was it over, or still developing?....

'Push me up' I demanded, more angry (with myself, with fate) than afraid, 'push me up'.  Pam did. She got me downstairs. Got me to the settee. Pleaded with me to let her call someone, to go to hospital, anything.... I refused all - I didn't need anyone to tell me what I knew already, what I had sometimes taught others about in a different life. What I had seen. What I had touched.... And, in the final analysis, what had now touched me!

I was so angry with the unfairness of it that I rejected even the suggestion of assistance. I would overcome it myself!

After several hours of shuffling about trying to make - willing - my body to get itself together my guardian angel (yes, I do believe that I have one) stepped in. She pushed me over in the toilet!!  And held me down in spite of all my efforts to escape!

'Fine friend you are - get me up' I demanded silently. There was no remiss. She had decided. Pam telephoned. Our dinner guests from last night returned.  I was hauled unceremoniously off the floor and returned to the lounge. Still refusing to go to hospital.

To be continued next month....

In the News ....
Cyprus court jails Briton...
A 15 year prison sentence was handed down by a court in Larnaca to Briton Julian Harrington - who changed his initial 'Not guilty' plea to 'guilty' - to the manslaughter of 17 year old Cypriot Christos Papiris in a hit and run incident in August 2006...

A Little Extra News
Well, here I am again, back in the news editors chair after a very welcome break - thanks to Ann & Richard. About three months since I last had the opportunity to wield the blue pencil.  Good to be back for a while.  The UK is still there and quite unchanged!

Our Prime Minister, Tony Blair was still coming and going when we left, though our understanding is that right now now, having realised that he has caused some little difficulties for New Labour by saying that he was 'leaving' he is apparently staying.....

The NHS continues to spiral ever closer to it's own 'Annus Horibilis' with some GP's being accused by the press not only of money grabbing, but also of removing unwelcome patients arbitrarily from their lists. They are about to be supervised by an independent complaints authority.

Here in Greece 'quack medicine (example) is still surviving, although the latest illusion - the olive tree leaf potion appears to have been made clear as a dangerous scam (Link). There was criticism of the government for not stopping TV coverage (Link). One 'Potion' seller in Athens, whom it seems had quite a sophisticated act, had two known offices. He was arrested (Link).

Meanwhile, amid reports of cancer treatments being held up by red-tape; infants having to travel abroad for heart surgery; a bid to quell fear of a cervical cancer-preventing vaccine (CV Cancer kills 30,000 women yearly in Europe); even the introduction of a stick on 'Patch' to treat Alzheimer's disease and a a micro-chip retinal implant which can help restore vision, state medicine still struggles whist private medicine flourishes.

The quick and the dead - or am I becoming a bit cynical?

A Little Site News - Photo Galleries.

Bird Galleries.
  NEW Gallery Page 4 Online...
The first pages of our bird photograph gallery went on line in March 2006. Colin Turvey's Cretan Bird-Life photograph gallery (see February 2006 News) has now added a third page. We are now working hard on adding page 5 - another 12 of Colin's bird photographs - which will bring the number up to 60 so far. A big plus for Cretanvista.

Wild Flowers
: NEW 216 different wild flowers.
99% of photos have been taken right here at the base of the Rodopos peninsula. We are continually working on these galleries and will, as soon as practicable, be adding further online pages, including detailed reference pages and more photos of each specimen. We will be publishing our book - but all the information will remain on line.

Cretan Countryside:
The basic page is already on-line - has been so for some time.  In the background we have been busy collecting more photographs and will very soon be publishing the first gallery. There really is some superb wild life on Crete.

The February  has seen the Cretan countryside continue it's very, very, early Start.  It seems that almost every wild flower on Crete is in bloom. The birds and the bees, to say nothing of the beetles and lizards abound. The sheep are being moved to their summer pastures.  The previously tiny bouncing lambs and goat kids are now growing rapidly. The Sun shineth most of the time!

No Change - Still in line.
Anastasios Sakoulis, who contributed the magnificent gallery from his book on Cretan wildlife Moments of Cretan Nature to our site,  has also contributed 18 pictures of birds for addition to a gallery. We will attach this to Paul Smith's bird-watching page in the near future.

But that isn't all...
Anastasios Sakoulis has also given us permission (and supplied the photographs) to produce a gallery of his latest book. A book of 20 superb postcards of Cretan wildlife called Naturally... Crete

Miniature Chapels of Crete.
A first!
Klaus-Dieter Thill - author of  Minaturkapellen auf Krista, a real photo album detailing some of those enigmatic roadside shrines of Crete. Klaus has supplied photographs for this gallery which is now on-line here at Cretanvista. There will also be, of course, a review the book - which we have already. Klaus is not keen on that as the book is not publicly available, but we hope to persuade him!

He is working on some photographs of Chania and if all goes well we will be publishing these.

Calendar Photo Galleries:
A new one every year! The 2006 gallery is, of course, on-line (LINK) and the 2007 Calendar gallery is as good as complete. We are already arguing the topic selection for this year's 2008 gallery!

GENERAL: There are now 13 galleries featuring aspects of Cretan life, including sunrise and sunset pictures; Souda Bay War Cemetery; and the gallery of magnificent wild-life pictures by Anastasios Sakoulis, author of  "Stigmotipa Tis Kritikis Freesis" (Moments of Cretan Nature); our infant gallery about house renovation; and of course our annual calendar galleries containing 60 or so pictures of north western Crete about to increase by 12 - for 2007.

Our hand-weaving page has been developed much further lately and the revison is now almost ready to be uploaded.  A beautiful craft producing beautiful products.

E-Mail Requests..
We receive some brilliant e-mails - really - and they are very welcome.  But sometimes there is no acknowledgement that our answer has been received.  We don't mind, but worry occasionally that someone may not have received an answer from us and think the worse of us!  We will ALWAYS reply to e-mail so please, if you have mailed us and not received an answer - resend your mail - we didn't get it or have somehow overlooked it.
Our response time is usually within 48 hours.

Personal Information..
We have been asked in the past to help locate people. We would love to be able to assist but regret that are unable to do this.

Questions and Answers..
Quite a lot of questions are received here at  Cretanvista and, as with e-mails and other forms of communication, we do our best to supply valid answers.  We never respond "Off the Top of our Heads" but always research the answer - even if we already have one (things change) before passing the information on.  We provide links to appropriate alternative sources where we have them.  The answers are given with the proviso that recipients are responsible for any action taken by them.

Guest Book.  E-mail links are accepted.  Website URL, Bulletin board and chat-room style links are not.  Website links are removed automatically to prevent inclusion of sites without agreement.

The Cretan Vista Calendar Photos - Birds.
We trying to build a specialist calendar of birds - whilst we are building our own library photographs - contributions are always welcome. They will always be acknowledged and copyright will remain your own.

(Please email us before sending pictures).

Bird Watchers.
Paul Smith's  FEBRUARY DIARY is now on line at all Cretanvista URL's.

We remain deeply indebted to Han and Inger van der Lelie, 3815 PV Amersfoort, who enabled us to publish the June 2005 page of Paul's unbroken series.

BUT, we are now working on a solution to this particular indebtedness, not just hoping that one will pop out of the Cretan countryside!  We had hoped that perhaps Han and Inger would return to Crete - we know that Paul would just love to meet the couple who took over his page - and then skipped the country whilst he was still hospitalised!

We would love to know how the bird watching has progressed since this starlit beginning......

Can this be you.....or yours?.. This Month - Wilf B.
Every so often when I am out and about taking photographs I come across someone who could be you - or something which could be yours (or theirs!!).  Maybe passing in the opposite direction on a full tandem bicycle (yes, that happened); an unattended car with foreign plates; something which catches my eye and leaves me not knowing......... Either there was no one to ask or they were moving too quickly!  I thought that perhaps site visitors might like to see or be able to help identify one or two 'unknowns' which have left me wondering who, or what I have missed.   Is this you?
