OCTOBER WEATHER ...
Very nice sunny days are now quite often being replaced by cold, wet days with increasing frequency. There was still time for a dip or two on the better days but a glorious autumn is being elbowed aside by an impatient winter....  New Crete Weather Site Link.

Village Life...Phostistiko petrelaio...
Village life without it was more the problem! 'Phostistiko Petraleio' that is....

Realising that our new life on Crete was more akin to an SAS training exercise - tuned up to weed out the already not so weedy, friends in the UK donated paraffin burning pressure lamps to light our way at night.  Well, no electricity did make it a bit dark and candles only helped accentuate the hooting of owls - eerie if you dwell on it - and the rapid swishing beat of very near flying bats - to a degree that made Halloween seem like a Walt Disney fairy tale... And what was that rustling sound in the darkened bedroom - mice?.. Snakes?.. Rats?.. Worse?!  If only the draught was Guinness and not caused by no roof/windows/doors....  Oh, maybe not Guinness - that is as black as the night too - how would I find it in the dark?

What was needed was seriously bright, all illuminating light! Hence the lamps. We had two. One ex-Burton on Trent, one ex-British army everywhere.  What we did not have was expertise.  The advice said to fill them with Paraffin, pump them up (like an old blow lamp), place some Paraffin in the dish surrounding the pipe below the globe (Globe as in gas lamp!) and set fire to it. After a minute or so turn on the fuel supply, and 'whoosh' let there be light.... Easy eh?  Reality is more like the "Don't try this at home" stunts on TV...  I can tell you what is wrong with flame-throwers as weapons of war - they kill unwary operators!!

However, being faint hearted does not light the lamps. Onward.  Onward to Chania and a shop selling fishing tackle - for boats.  And lamps which looked like ours.  On sale at the rate of twenty pounds for a shiny, Chinese made 2 litre job.  By the time I had purchased all the advised spares the bill was nearer fifty.  "Oh, and by the way" (not wishing to appear stupid) "what fuel does this use"?  'Petrol' came the reply. I see. PETROL... My suggestions of 'Paraffin' met blank faces - what was 'paraffin?'  Petrol was confirmed...

OK - they want me to fill these lamps with petrol (2 litres a go) put some in the little dish around the tube below the globe and light it with a match!! I may look stupid, I may even be stupid, but I am a live stupid... No way am I applying a match to 2 litres of petrol - even if it is in a can so to speak.  My name is Petros, not suicide or Molotov... not even cocktail...  And I haven't seen an enemy tank anywhere.

Unconvinced I try the petrol station - they may also have paraffin.  No - Yiannis had never heard of it.  'Phostistiko Petraleio' says he.  He may be correct, but I have never heard of that. Sounded like a cross between phosphorus and petrol to me, a born coward...(delivered at home by the local midwife - I just know about hazards!).

I was in despair - now there were THREE lamps - a promised aggregate of thousands of candle power - and not a drop of paraffin in sight... Only the dark nights with seriously spooky noises and wavering candles illuminating faces like masks from a Dracula movie.  Maybe this was a Dracula movie.. Maybe Halloween III for real. Something had to be done. Stellios to the rescue - our farmer/plumbing neighbour!  A good friend who is also a man of action.  A traditional Cretan warrior - seriously.  He immediately consulted his Greek/English dictionary. 'Kerosene' he said, 'Kerosene is paraffin'.  Problem solved.. Back to the petrol station.  'Kerosene'..?  More blank looks from Yiannis.  "Phostistiko Petraleio" he re-offered.

Back to Stellios.  'Kerosene' - he pondered, and pondered... His proverbial drachma suddenly dropped. Stellios grinned from ear to ear.  'We go to the airport' he declared. Certain. Sure. Acting always first. We were about to solve my light problem...  Though I couldn't quite see it.
Surely we don't need to fly elsewhere for Kerosene?  It just isn't worth it...  'No' beamed Stellios, 'they run the planes on Kerosene - we will get some from them!'  'Them' being the Greek Air Force - Chania is a fighter base...

My nerve gave out.  Molotov cocktails and tanks OK..  But the guards at Chania have real guns! No way. I went back to Yiannis petrol station.  His 'Phostistiko Petraleio' smelled and looked suspiciously like paraffin.  I bought some. I filled my lamps and after learning the skill of blow lamp lighting (exciting in itself) successfully lit my lamps. Very, Very, bright!

Last year my annual request for 'Phostistiko Petraleio' at the petrol station was met with a blank look from Yiannis.  "We don't have this" he said, "only kerosene".....

In the News...

150 illegal immigrants arrive Paleochora...
But it is no means certain where they originally started from.  Some reports said that they claimed to be Palestinians, others that there were Iraqi's, Egyptians and Indians on Board a rescued boat from Rafa (Egypt) heading for Italy.... Link to Story.

Crete not a tame Island...
Occasionally, but for the police, lynch-law might just hold sway....           Link to story.

But even so.... What next?
Same as last link but down the page a bit, you will 'find' three missing coffins..

More jails?...
But on an island no more than 15miles wide in places, more jails take up a lot of rooms!                                   Link to Story.

When flying from Crete...
Always switch off your mobile 'phone - unless you happen to be the pilot..      Link to story.

But on a more serious note ...
The BBC has finally found a way to silence the British voice of Greece.  Apparently 66 years worth of successful operation count for nothing... Not really a surprise, maybe next they will cut off the water!!  Link to story.

Emergency landing at Iraklion  ...
Air France Paris-Cairo A330 made a successful emergency landing at Iraklion after diverting en-route Egypt...        Link to Story.

Cretan Hotelier taken hostage..

Samaria Gorge not tame either ...
The biggest gorge in Europe, the Samaria gorge, Nomos Chanion, has claimed British lives in flash floods in the past.  It is not safe if there are clouds in the sky - forget that at your peril....                            Link to Story.

August Helios Airways crash...
Will in all probability end on Akrotiri, Crete, at Chania airport - where the flight and final moments of the ill fated August flight from Cyprus to Athens, which tragically ended in the deaths of 121 passengers and crew, were simulated at the Olympic airways flight training facility.

British University advances artificial hands...
The Greek TV ERT news site recently brought news of a 'Remidi-hand', developed by a team at Southampton University is very much closer to mimicking the real human hand than at any time in the past.

Perhaps for raising your glasses..
Because, apparently, 'Malvasia' is the best wine in the world!  And where better to hold an international wine convention - to discuss that theory and carry out some light testing - than with the assistance of (take a big breath and another sip..) the Association of Malvasia Producers of Crete and the Greek Taste Academy under the aegis of the Municipality of Gazi (it can't be!).. I wonder if they do a PhD?                     Link to Story.

Iraklion....'Sweets for my sweet'..
'
Sugar for my honey'.. You may or may not be old enough to remember the 'Searchers' one of the top group of the 60's, but I feel certain that my dentist does.. 'Sweet tooth'.

Dr Livingstone I presume?..
Well, Kenneth anyway.  Obviously inspired by Ken Livingstone's 'Congestion Charge' in London, authorities in Athens are seeking to implement a similar scheme to help reduce unnecessary journeys into central Athens.

And more power to their elbows - of the 6.6 million journeys into the city each day only 41% are made on the very efficient public transport....                           Link to Story.

Cyclamen are popular...

Pity some people have to 'have' what is not theirs... The only consolation at finding white cyclamen corms 'lifted' is that it was a professional job - pity the flower will no longer be there for everyone...

Earthquakes are a common feature of life in Greece and rarely cause any damage. The problem is that the ones that do are unpredictable. Recent Greek research has indicated a strong earthquake in SW Bulgaria and the continued advance in methods of prediction.

A Little Extra News.... Threatened Flowers...

One of the great things about being able to live at the base of the Rodopos peninsula is that we are surrounded by wildlife of all descriptions.  Some of it, particularly the wild flowers, can be very beautiful, given the chance.

'Chance', my mother used to tell me, 'is a fine thing'. I am now, many years later, beginning to see the point.

Paul Smith, our resident bird watching expert, recently replied to an e-mailed bird photograph I had taken (it turned out to be an adult bonellis eagle in full flight). Ever honest he said basically - 'where did you take it? There are about ten pairs on Crete with at least one pair on ... (but don't dare tell anyone else where they are or you will have to eat each and every one of my premium bonds without the benefit of even one drop of Amstel).

He can be a bit secretive. A bit protective of wildlife. Giving it a chance maybe... First my mother, now Paul Smith.

I am a bit of a slow learner, but a few days ago I finally got there. Cyclamen... We have an absolutely astounding show of cyclamen in the areas close to our village this year.  Astounding.. Dark pink, light pinks, white,... Wait - did I say white? The pure white varieties are a very, very small minority, at least in this area.  Now there are probably none....

Searching the beds for photographs of the white variety we found none. Even in the more secluded and difficult to reach spots... But we did find, even in the secluded spots, regular occurrences of  similar shaped holes - maybe made by a trowel..  And traces of cyclamen root. Corms gone. But in one case the a broken off flower head. Pure white. Examples of Cyclamen graecum.  Common enough - but not the pure white. Have a look at our picture strip above.

A local? Not likely.  A tourist then?  Well, maybe... But not a casual.  We have known members of cyclamen societies from abroad take specimens - one carrying a digging tool whilst the other denied what they were doing, and the flowering this year has attracted more than a few...

Expatriate collector or tour operator?  Probably.  No proof. But strangers do tend to be noticed and commented upon. You can't visit this area without being noticed....

Given the chance the corms which were removed would no doubt have multiplied and been there in increasing numbers for all who are interested in wild flowers.  All those who, given the chance, would have been able to view them here in their local, natural habitat.  Or, had we been given the chance been available for many more to see on Cretanvista flower galleries - 25,000 potential viewers a month, many who of whom would have been able to see a local specimen in it's natural habitat whenever they wanted to and wherever they are.  Given the chance....

Given the chance I would publish your photograph - high resolution....

A Little More Site News.
How about that?....
Since we first published our site in 2001 it has grown slowly but surely to its present size. Cretanvista contains more than 1500 files; supported by over 1000 photographs (mostly high quality).  To keep it all together there are more than 4,000 links between the files.  If you read our news page you may notice some of the links to other sites, all of which have to be replaced with an updated set for each edition - once a month...  As does the news page itself.

Finding us ......

Don't forget you can access this website via several different spellings of our site name. So if your typing skills are a bit 'iffy' you can still find us.  We also use different ISP's and domain endings to make it as easy as possible for you to find us.

Try it: www.cretanvista.co.uk really is no different to www.cretanvista.gr - except that you receive them from different parts of the world.

Did you want one and didn't get one?!
The publishers have agreed to support our Christmas/New Year news with a few more copies of Carol Palioudaki' The Cool Guide to Living in Crete (Cool Publications). You can of course buy one yourself if you can't wait, but Christmas isn't far away if you can...

Books & Good Reading - Latest Review.
No increase this month, but several in the pipes... Try our latest, you may want it for Christmas...

Dr Paul Sterry. HarperCollins.

The people behind the books:  Every book review has an introductory paragraph about the author/s. We have decided to go a little further and where possible, include profiles of not only these talented authors but also, where we can, of people behind them.

Good examples are  'Patouchas' - Ioannis Kondylakis  (Read the review) and 'Who Pays The Ferryman' - Michael J. Bird (Read the  review)  These profiles will be attached to relevant book reviews.  Watch this space...

Photo Galleries
NEW Gallery.
A first! Klaus-Dieter Thill - author of  Minaturkapellen auf Kreta, a real photo albumn detailing some of those enigmatic roadside shrines of Crete, has supplied photographs for a gallery which is now being put together here at Cretanvista. There will also be, of course, a review the book... the gallery should be on-line within the next week or so...

Wild Flowers: Up from 96 to 144 different wild flowers covered.
99% have been taken right here at the base of the Rodopos peninsula. We are continually working on these galleries and will soon been adding further pages including detailed reference pages and more photos of each specimen. There are now more than 4,000 flower photographs in our databases. Rising to 168 shortly and an additional 24 already in the workshop!

Bird Galleries.  Building on...
Athanasios Sakoulis, who contributed the magnificent gallery from his book on Cretan wildlife to our site has now contributed 18 pictures of birds for addition to a gallery. We will attach this to Paul Smith's bird-watching page in the near future.  Something worth waiting for..

Insects..
We have built up an extensive collection of  photographs from which we are producing galleries for our wild life page.  The next of these will be insects - about which we have received few queries, but many of which are supremely photogenic.  We have some beautiful reptiles too...

GENERAL: There are now 13 galleries featuring aspects of Cretan life, including sunrise and sunset pictures; Souda Bay War Cemetery; and the gallery of magnificent wild-life pictures by Anastasios Sakoulis, author of  "Stigmotipa Tis Kritikis Freesis" (Moments of Cretan Nature) - (Links below - bottom right column); our infant gallery about house renovation; and of course our annual calendar galleries containing 60 or so pictures of north western Crete.

There are of course many other areas being developed all the time - including new ones in the pipeline....  Continued progress with additions to our weaving page for example, is being built upon to match the practice which has taken place since the page was first added.

Quite a lot of questions are received here at  Cretanvista and, as with e-mails and other forms of communication, we do our best to supply valid answers.  We never respond "Off the Top of our Heads" but always research the answer - even if we already have one (things change) before passing the information on.  We provide links to appropriate alternative sources where we have them.  The answers are given with the proviso that recipients are responsible for any action taken by them.

Bird Watchers.
Paul Smith, our resident specialist on ornithology, as regular readers of his page will know, has undergone very serious surgery for a life threatening illness.  He is now winning the fight - at his home is Neo Chorio, Voukolies. New OCTOBER Diary.

Can this be you.....or yours?
Every so often when I am out and about taking photographs I come across someone who could be you - or something which could be yours (or theirs!!).  Maybe passing in the opposite direction on a full tandem bicycle (yes, that happened); an unattended car with foreign plates; something which catches my eye and leaves me not knowing......... Either there was no one to ask or they were moving too quickly!  I thought that perhaps site visitors might like to see or be able to help identify one or two 'unknowns' which have left me wondering who, or what I have missed.   Can this be yours?
