OCTOBER WEATHER ...
Remained very good on the whole - perhaps a little cool for swimming, although some people were still indulging, but some days were very, very warm.  The cloud was gradually building up though and a few real storms, though short lived, brought hope to the olive farmers...

                         Paul Smith

Our utterly reliable resident bird-watching expert.

Above: Cretanvista's Paul Smith - has been with us almost as long as the site has been on line - since August 2001 to be precise.  We have lost count of the number of bird sightings he has reported in his column, which may well be the foremost regular bird-watching column on Crete. Paul Smith's Page

Astratigos Village life...
It started as a love affair. It has continued ever since....  With the passage of time it has become beautifully mellow, this particular affair, it has become deeper and deeper, like the colour of a superbly ageing wine. The colour deeper, richer like superbly ageing oak. The aroma deeper. Richer. Like ageing walnut ....

It started with 'O Patreeck'.  He was the first - but of course he didn't last.  Then came Stelios - his part lasted over two years but then he went the way of his predecessor.  The came Terry, only to be quickly replaced by Ben.  Ben, blonde, blue eyed Ben!  But no he didn't last either, although he is always willing to return...  Ben was replaced by Andy; Andy by Stelios II.  But they, like all the others - now gone.

I remember our wedding - no Stelios's then.  No Patreeck's; no Terry's; no Ben's; no Andy's; no Stelios II's!  Just me, my position unassailable.  An unchallengeable star.  A real first, not a passing fancy.  But then I digress. Lets get back to the story. Where was I?  Ah, yes, romance... Increasingly mellow, the colour of superbly ageing wine.  The deeper aroma....

The aroma..! Like ageing walnut - mixed with fresh cotton and local sheep!!  Well, local sheep after bathing anyway.  And it creaks when it moves. Even sheep don't do that.

There is nothing, but nothing, to complete a modern romance with Crete than...

"Pssst, wanna buy a loom love"?  (O'Patreeck').  We did and we did. From a family in upper Afrata.  It is very old.  It had belonged to the vendor's mother. But the vendor, like many of her now ageing generation, no longer used it.  Pam would use it. Although unable to weave at the time she would (she said) learn. Spinning too! After we had renovated the ruined house in the next village we had just bought! The loom was excellent - just minus the shuttle. But where would we keep it?

Enter Stelios I - he stored the loom (with his rabbits and tools) in his outhouse while we renovated our house. A magic man...  A perfect loom. Oh' the patina of the wood, so smooooth.
Wait a moment though - the heddles, made of cord - lots were broken. Enter Terry, on long term holiday with his wife Kate - he spent hours repairing (perfectly) the broken cords - to say nothing of assembling the new Ashford spinning wheel.  All for a beer or two.  Another magic man.  Oh dear, Heddle pulleys no good.  Andy made some absolutely perfect oak replicas - irreplaceable.  Hang on - what about the warp (thread). Well, Ben (a carpenter) made a warping board for special projects and the raddle (like a huge comb) to separate the warp threads.  A gentleman without doubt.  Another moment - is all it took Stelios II to have our empty warp beam re-filled with 350 threads, each 100 pixes (Pikhes) long. 64 centimetres x 100 makes 350 threads x 6400cm.  I can tell you that it weighs a lot - I carried the last through Chania on my shoulder.  But Stelios II - a superman! A traditional warp beam, traditionally warped, with thread actually made here on Crete - (But spare a thought for the woman who 'warped' the beam so to speak).

So, there have been lots of other men in Pam's life, all eager and much appreciated helpers to get her traditional Cretan loom back on the road.  Have they succeeded?  All of them!  Pam weaves regularly and prolifically - her work is superb.  She got that from me - apparently my great grandfather was a weaver!!

Picture Strip: And the rains came - they certainly did - Chania Market Hall on Oct 5th!

Site News.
German Language Version. Gudrun Harms, our German language translator has been making much progress of late and we are hopeful that the main site will soon be available.  We are aware that automatic translation is available but anyone who has used these tools will tell you that they are far from perfect.  They certainly cannot translate my sense of humour!

Food and Drink.
The Greek recipe page has been quiet for a long time - although the few recipes we have are outstanding - the recipes are local interpretations of the real thing, and we do try them before we share .  However, our next addition is in the pipes and no, it is not a recipe for mince pies - and I really do miss steak and kidney pudding!! Keep watching.

Books & Good Reading.
Growing rapidly and is now in need of it's own introductory page and index - which we are now addressing.  It may be New Year though the reviews will keep coming and are currently added below (Rt hand Column). Two new reviews this month.

Photo Galleries. (Homepage links).
An addition to our flower galleries is in the offing - we currently have 3541 photographs of flowers that you can find here on the Rodopos peninsula.  Not all different varieties of course! But we will be expanding this section of the site soon, certainly well before the next season for visiting enthusiasts, and adding much more detail - including locations you can search personally.

There are of course many other developments going on all the time - including new ones which I have to bite my tongue rather than reveal until opening day.

Are we listening, do we hear?
We are and we do.  The continuously increasing numbers of visitors and complimentary e-mails seem to show that our visitors - 21,000 plus individual visits in our best month so far this year - appreciate our efforts.

I must confess to being at a loss to understand the motives of those who bombard with rubbish spam and viruses the e-mail of a free site, which diverts any offered finance to sick and handicapped children a bit difficult to understand...

Two things I would like to emphasize:-
1. We do not compete with commercial sites - they have a living to make.  Several also assist us indirectly - for example by giving permission to use material they own; providing good  links and even, one case, advertising and a little graphic design in exchange for access, if they want it, to our site content.

2. If you have any of our work on your site without our consent - seek permission now.

Well, it really is good to know that someone other than me thinks well about the site and asks questions which are easy to answer.  What problems did we have? - All of them!
What was easy? - Nothing!
What was impossible? - Stopping laughing - is it hysteria?

(Sorry!- But I really enjoyed it...WB)

Earthquakes. Wobbling Still.....

Earthquake activity in Greece continues as usual. There were only four reports of note reported during August, although the last was a little close to home:-

07 Oct:  5.2 Richter Scale  04.00am. The undersea epicenter was located 30Km NE of the island of Astyphalia, nr Rhodes.  The shock was felt on Crete.

07 Oct: 4.7 Richter Scale 10.00am South of Cape Tainaro, Southern Peloponnese.  Link to story

No damage or injuries were reported.

Earthquakes are a common feature of life  in Greece and rarely cause any damage. The problem is that the ones that do are unpredictable. However, at least one professor believes that there will be at least 4 major quakes in the future.  Story Link.

A little ecological  news...

Paul Smith will undoubtedly be happier to learn that the cause of the recent ecological disaster at lake Koroneia, northern Greece, has at last been explained.

He will be less happy to learn that the cause of the disaster, in which at least 30,000 birds of 29 species died after landing at the lake - 20Km or so east of Thessaloniki - many during migration was Clostridium Botulinus.  This is one of the most virulent natural bacilli known, type C affecting birds, not people.  Not a great deal of comfort to bird-watchers perhaps.   Story.

In the News...

October terror threats to airliners...
Olympic Airways, the Greek national carrier received more than its fair share of bomb warnings - relating to aircraft already airborne, in October.  Kathimerini reported that an Airbus A340 bound en-route Athens - New York had to be diverted to London Stanstead on Sep 28th - the second such incident within three days...
Link to story.

Hazarding 307 Lives..

MPA News carried details of the not unexpected result of the diversion of the flight to Britain - RAF escorting Tornado fighters with inevitable orders..

September 30th brought yet another hoax threat..
Another Olympic flight to New York was diverted to Shannon, in Ireland, after another threat.  Link to story.

No doubt hazarding another 302 lives...

But It wasn't just Olympic Airways...
On 12th October a Scandinavian Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Chicago received a similar warning, but continued to its destination with no problems after a Dutch police decision.  Link to story.

Cretan Gun Accident..
A 9 year old boy was accidentally shot and seriously wounded in Vianno, Iraklion on Oct 1st... Link to story.

New Greek Orthodox Patriarch...
The new Orthodox Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa (see this column, last month) is the Cretan born Theodorus II.  Perhaps I will not incur wrath by pointing to Crete as the origin of other great people... Link to story.

Greece celebrates on 28th - No!
Greece celebrated the anniversary of 'OXI' day on 28th Oct - the day, in case you didn't know, when the the Prime minister Metaxa informed the Axis forces of WWII that 'No!' - they could not enter Greece.  Link to story.

But then we all knew that, didn't we?...
October news relating to Greece contained some startling or maybe not so startling, revelations.

1. Mediterranean diet is good for you!  Story Link.
2. Mediterranean beans have bounce!   Link to story.

Well, that's about it for now.....
But please keep watching - Cretanvista is always expanding and is regularly updated - and we have one of the best teams to tell you about Crete whose motivation is to do just that.  Their time and expertise is free to you but involves not a little time and effort on their part.

In a forthcoming edition we will feature the entire team and perhaps tell you a little more about them.  Meanwhile you can be absolutely certain that their contributions are first rate.  Their expertise second to none.

This years Christmas cards and calendars are progressing - printing is imminent but there is still a lot of hard work to do, so I can make no promises about the date that the next calendar photo-gallery will go on line.

Please bear with us.  We do not sell anything.  Cretanvista websites are absolutely free to you.  Cretan Vista products are for internal use only.  Though I must admit that last year one English visitor to the site persuaded us to send him a calendar in exchange for a donation to Gt Ormond Street Children's Hospital, London. Super...

I just hope that I can get the calendars moving before people want to hang them up, though maybe they will be in such awe at my photography they will not notice last year's dates on them!!

E-Mail Requests..
I receive some brilliant e-mails - really - and they are very welcome.  But sometimes there is no acknowledgement that our answer has been received.  We don't mind, but worry occasionally that someone may not have received an answer from us and think the worse of us!  We will ALWAYS reply to e-mail so please, if you have mailed us and not received an answer - resend your mail - we didn't get it or have somehow overlooked it.
Our response time is usually within 48 hours.

Personal Information..
We have been asked in the past to help locate people. We would love to be able to assist but regret that are unable to do this.  There is fuller comment in previous issues of CV News.

Questions and Answers..
Quite a lot of questions are received here at Cretanvista and, as with e-mails and other forms of communication, we do our best to supply valid answers.  We never respond "Off the Top of our Heads" but always research the answer - even if we already have one (things change) before passing the information on.  We provide links to appropriate alternative sources where we have them.  The answers are given with the proviso that recipients are responsible for any action taken by them.

Guest Book.  E-mail links are accepted.  Website URL, Bulletin board and chat-room style links are not.  Website links are removed automatically to prevent inclusion of sites without agreement.

Book Reviews.
Because each book review is original - we steal nothing from the book covers or the reviews of others - it takes a little longer to deal with each.  No point our reviewing the reviews when what readers really want to know about is the content! 'Books and good reading'.

(2004 Calendar Photos en- route)
We have still not yet decided this years format or theme.  Certainly we have enough photographs to choose from - and we are also, in addition, trying to build a specialist calendar of birds - photographs are always welcome.
(Please email us first).

Bird Watchers.
Paul Smiths' bird watching diary page remains very popular and hopefully Paul is well into his November 2004 diary.  We are sincerely indebted to visitors who have supplied photographs.  We will be displaying these in CVNews, please don't lose heart. Hopefully we will receive enough to start a gallery of Cretan sightings.

Book Review News.  New Books..
Greece On My Wheels - Edward EnfieldYou may have passed him on the road - he might even, on his bike, have passed you as he cycled from England, due south, to cross Greece.  Join Harry Enfield's famous father in a super travelogue about Greece.  Read the Review

Angel Tree - Alex Dingwall- Main.
Here the author of Luberon Garden accepts a commission to search for the oldest olive tree - and where else can he search but Europe?  France; Spain; Italy; Greece - including Crete, all come under scrutiny.  Although Dingwall-Main may not know it he missed the goal - the oldest olive is right here on Crete. Everyone here knows that!  Read the Review.

Recently completed.
'Who Pays The Ferryman' - Michael J. Bird -
vintage 1993 maybe, but, like the TV series from the book and fine wine, what a vintage! A first rate story based on Crete, love and the Cretan vendetta. Read the  review.

*'Eleni' by Nicolas Gage.
Published by Harvill - (ISBN 1 86046 346 0) first published 1983.  Reprinted.

This is his true story of a son seeking to avenge his mothers murder by ELAS Guerillas during the Greek civil war.  Real.  Compelling.  Harrowing in the extreme.  Revealing the Greek psych as nothing I have ever read.  But, unless you have no feelings, it could haunt you forever......  Read the review.

*'Patouchas' - Ioannis Kondylakis.  Kondylakis died in 1920 but his story of the rites of passage from uncouth shepherd youth to civilised villager has become a classic.  Cretan throughout.  Read the review

Making a Garden on a Greek Hillside - Jaqueline Tyrwhitt -
Isn't this just what we all want to do?! Superb plant detail.  The story of buying a plot; building a house: moving in; making a garden; Greek life - feastings, fastings, festivals and name days are a real bonus.  Read the review.

Land of Crete - George Meis.
Brilliant photography, superb artwork.  Beautiful photographic genius from George Meis.   Read the review.

Still the Best Nature -  'Moments of Cretan Nature' by Anastasios Sakoulis, (ISBN: 960-91979-0-6) "Stigmotipa Tis Kritikis Freesis" in Greek -  is a super book with some magnificent photographs.  Our review is accompanied by a small photo gallery - our first review to do so.  Our site pictures (from the book - with permission) are, we think, nice!  The printed pictures in the book are in almost all cases very much bigger, nicer!

Can this be you.....or yours?
Every so often when I am out and about taking photographs I come across someone who could be you - or something which could be yours (or theirs!!).  Maybe passing in the opposite direction on a full tandem bicycle (yes, that happened); an unattended car with foreign plates; something which catches my eye and leaves me not knowing......... Either there was no one to ask or they were moving too quickly!  I thought that perhaps site visitors might like to see or be able to help identify one or two 'unknowns' which have left me wondering who, or what, I have missed.   Is this yours?
